If your Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) hearing appears delayed, first verify the latest listing for your appeal on the official case-status service, then check the relevant bench’s latest cause list, revised cause list and notices. If the listing remains unclear or you want the matter heard sooner, contact the bench registry using current official details and consult a qualified tax practitioner or tax litigation lawyer about whether to file a petition. An online filing does not guarantee that the bench will allow it or set an earlier date.
How to check your current ITAT hearing date
- Look up the appeal: Open the official ITAT Case Status page and use its search options, including search by date of filing, to find the relevant appeal entry. Check that the case details match your matter.
- Check the relevant bench’s current listings: Open the ITAT Notice Board and look for the latest cause list, revised cause list and notices for that bench and date. Notices may show hearing arrangements or an adjourned date; a revised list or notice may supersede an earlier listing.
- Recheck close to the hearing: The notice board is dynamic. Review the latest official material near the scheduled date rather than relying solely on an older cause list, saved copy or previously noted date.
- Resolve conflicting or unclear information: Confirm the listing with the relevant bench registry using current information from the official ITAT site. Avoid relying on a contact number or email found in an old notice without checking whether it is still current.
The ITAT provides case-status and bench listing channels, but a status entry should not be treated as conclusive if a more recent bench notice gives different information. The ITAT homepage, itat.gov.in, also publishes bench cause lists and order-pronouncement listings.
What to do if the hearing has been adjourned or moved
Use the newest official bench notice or revised cause list to establish whether the hearing was adjourned and whether a new date is stated. If no new date is clear, ask the registry to confirm the current listing. Keep the relevant appeal details and the notice or listing you are asking about available when making that inquiry.
Do not assume that every delay has the same cause, that an old date remains in force, or that an appeal will be listed by a particular deadline. The official sources cited here do not establish a universal delay deadline, automatic remedy, average delay duration or guaranteed response time for an escalation.

Can you ask ITAT for an earlier hearing?
The ITAT E-Filing Standard Operating Procedure dated 24 June 2021 says: “Petitions like Early Hearing Petition, Adjournment Petition, Clubbing Petition, Withdrawal Petition, etc. can be filed electronically through e-Filing Portal.” This identifies early-hearing petitions as a type that may be filed electronically; it does not promise acceptance, a decision by a certain date or an earlier hearing.
Because the published SOP is dated 2021, check the current portal instructions before filing. The SOP PDF is available from the ITAT website. For case-specific advice on whether an early-hearing petition is appropriate, what to include or whether another step is preferable, consult a qualified tax practitioner or tax litigation lawyer.

What an e-filed petition does—and does not—mean
Submitting a petition is a request to the tribunal, not proof that the request has been allowed. Treat an earlier date as confirmed only when it appears in an official order, notice or current listing. Check the relevant bench’s official material after filing for any decision or changed date.
If you need to use the e-filing portal, start at ITAT e-Filing. Its help page notes that network traffic can sometimes delay OTP delivery. An OTP problem is a portal-access issue, not evidence that the tribunal has changed your hearing date. Consult the portal’s current help information if you cannot log in.
