Change the exposed password on the affected account, replace it anywhere you reused it, and turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) where available. If identity or financial information was exposed, take the additional steps recommended for that type of data; a password change alone may not address the risk.
What does a breach report tell you?
A breach report can describe data tied to a particular service or a collection of exposed credentials. The distinction matters: when a specific service is known, secure that account first; when the source is unclear, remove any password reuse across your accounts.
A June 2025 update to Leo A. Notenboom’s Ask Leo! article discussed a report of “16 billion passwords exposed.” The article said the dataset’s source was unknown and presented an infostealer aggregation as a possibility, not a confirmed cause. That figure should not be read as a verified count of unique people, unique passwords, or one confirmed breach. The article’s “latest” framing belongs to its July 14, 2025 publication context; it does not establish which breach is latest in October 2026. Ask Leo!’s article
A separate dataset illustrates why reports should not be conflated: Have I Been Pwned says law enforcement supplied 15.3 million victim email addresses and 43.8 million victim passwords after the May 2025 Operation Endgame 2.0 operation. Those are figures for that separate dataset, not confirmation of the 16-billion-entry report. Have I Been Pwned’s Operation Endgame 2.0 record

Can a breach lookup prove your address is safe?
No. Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) lets you search for an email address in data loaded into its breached-address service. A result can show that the address appears in listed datasets; no result does not prove it is absent from every dataset or from a newly reported incident. Ask Leo!’s footnote said HIBP did not appear to include the particular breach discussed at the time.
HIBP’s breached-address search is different from its Pwned Passwords service, which checks passwords. HIBP says passwords are not stored alongside personal identifiers in its breached-address dataset. A lookup is useful as one signal, not a substitute for securing accounts you know may be affected. What should you do about an exposed password?
- Change it on the affected service. Go to the service directly, rather than following an unexpected email link, and replace the exposed password.
- Change it anywhere it was reused. Attackers may try exposed email-and-password pairs on other services. Update every account that used the same password, including accounts where it was only slightly modified.
- Use a unique password for each account. A password manager can help generate and keep track of separate credentials. It is an optional aid, not a requirement; CISA also recommends password managers in its security guidance. CISA guidance on strong passwords
Should you enable multifactor authentication?
Yes, when the service offers it. MFA adds a verification factor beyond your password, making a stolen password less likely to be enough by itself. Follow the service’s own setup options and save any recovery codes securely.
A physical security key is one possible MFA method for services and devices that support it. Compatibility varies, so check the account’s security settings before choosing a method. CISA includes physical security keys among its security guidance, but does not establish that one key works with every account. CISA guidance on multifactor authentication

What if identity or financial information was exposed?
Password changes do not resolve every kind of breach risk. If the notice says Social Security, payment-card, bank, or other sensitive identity information was exposed, follow the steps that apply to those specific data types. The Federal Trade Commission directs consumers to IdentityTheft.gov’s data-breach response guidance; its advice is more relevant than treating every incident as a password problem.
