If an airspace closure disrupts your flight, first verify the status with the operating airline, then tell it whether you want to continue by rerouting or seek a refund. Save all notices and receipts, and ask what assistance the airline will provide while you wait. Your rights depend on the route, carrier, and applicable law: a closure may affect compensation, but it does not automatically remove every right to a refund, rerouting, or care.
What to do first
- Check before travelling to the airport. Look at the operating airline’s app, website, and messages, and check the airport’s flight information. During disruption in the Middle East or Cyprus, the UK Civil Aviation Authority advises checking official travel advice and confirming your flight status with the airline before setting out: CAA guidance for passengers facing disruption in the Middle East and Cyprus.
- Contact the operating airline. Ask it to confirm whether your flight is canceled or diverted and explain the available choices. A travel agent may be involved in your booking, but the cited UK and EU passenger guidance focuses on the operating airline’s responsibilities.
- State what outcome you want. If you still need to travel, say that you want rerouting and ask when and how you will be taken onward. If you prefer not to travel, ask whether you can choose a refund under the rules that apply to your journey. Do not assume that accepting a replacement flight and choosing a refund are interchangeable.
- If you landed short of your destination, ask about onward transport. Ask the airline how you will reach the booked destination, including any ground transport. EU guidance treats certain diversions as cancellations, but the sources here do not establish a universal transport rule for every country or situation.
- Ask what help is available while you wait. Where the relevant rules apply, ask about meals, refreshments, communications, overnight accommodation, and transport to and from a hotel.
- Keep a record. Save your booking confirmation, boarding pass, cancellation or diversion notice, airline messages, and receipts. If the airline cannot provide required care and you have to arrange it yourself, keep the expense reasonable and retain proof of payment.
- Use the airline’s official claims process. If your request is refused or left unresolved, complain to the airline. For an EU-rights issue, you can contact the relevant national authority if the airline does not provide a satisfactory explanation.
Which rights may apply?
There is no single worldwide rule for flights affected by airspace closures. The route, operating carrier, booking, circumstances of the disruption, and applicable law can all matter. The rules below summarize the UK, EU, and US guidance cited here; they do not determine passenger rights in every country.
United Kingdom
When an airline cancels a flight, the UK Department for Transport’s guide says passengers can choose between a refund and rerouting. Passengers waiting for an alternative flight are also entitled to care and support, including meals, refreshments, communications, and, when needed, overnight lodging and transport. Read the UK Air Passenger Travel Guide.

Compensation is a separate question. The guide says whether cancellation compensation is due depends on matters including how much notice the airline gave and the alternative flight offered. It is not due when extraordinary circumstances caused the cancellation. Air traffic control decisions and political instability are among the guide’s examples of circumstances outside an airline’s control, but whether a particular airspace closure meets the legal test depends on its facts. The UK summary of passenger rights sets out the distinction.

European Union
EU consumer guidance says a diversion to an airport that does not serve the same town, city, or region as the airport originally booked is treated as a cancellation. Reimbursement or rerouting and assistance can still be available even where extraordinary circumstances mean compensation is not payable. See the European Commission’s air passenger rights FAQs and its overview of air passenger rights.
United States
The US Department of Transportation’s cited guidance concerns refunds, not UK- or EU-style compensation or care rights. Under the DOT’s rules, a passenger who chooses to take an airline’s significantly delayed or changed alternative flight is not entitled to a refund. Airlines often offer alternative flights after a cancellation or significant delay or change, but the DOT page says it does not require those offers. Check the DOT’s refund guidance for the rule’s scope.

How to compare rerouting and a refund
Before choosing, compare the actual options the airline offers against what you need. Schedules and offers can change quickly, so confirm the details directly with the airline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Need to reach the destination? If so, ask for rerouting and the earliest realistic arrival, not just the departure time of the replacement flight.
- Where does the alternative take you? Confirm whether it reaches the booked airport or leaves you needing onward ground transport.
- What happens during the wait? Ask which meals, lodging, and transport the airline will provide, and when.
- What does your choice mean for a refund? Rules differ. For example, under the cited US DOT guidance, choosing to take a significantly delayed or changed alternative flight means you are not entitled to a refund under those rules.
What to keep if you claim expenses
Keep receipts for necessary costs you paid because the airline could not provide care that applies to your journey, along with messages showing what you requested and the airline’s response. UK guidance says reasonable costs may be claimed; luxury hotels and alcohol are examples of expenses unlikely to be reimbursed. Submit the claim through the airline’s official process and keep a copy of everything you send.
