First identify which problem you have: the device cannot see the Wi-Fi network, sees it but cannot join, or joins but has no internet. Then check the device’s saved network details, compare with another device, and investigate router compatibility or the internet connection based on the result.

Identify what is failing

Check the Wi-Fi icon and network list, then note which description fits. If possible, also check whether another device can use the new Wi-Fi.

  • Network not visible: The device cannot find the network name (SSID). Check that Wi-Fi is on, airplane mode is off, and the router is broadcasting a band the device supports.
  • Network visible, but the device will not join: It may reject the password, keep trying to connect, or fail during connection. A saved profile with an old password or configuration is one possibility.
  • Connected, but no internet: The device has joined Wi-Fi, but cannot reach the internet. This is different from failing to join; check another device and the modem/router connection.

Google recommends testing whether a phone can join another Wi-Fi network as part of separating a device problem from a network or internet problem. Google Pixel Help

Check the device and refresh its saved Wi-Fi profile

  1. Confirm Wi-Fi is turned on, airplane mode is off, and the selected network is the intended one.
  2. Enter the current Wi-Fi password carefully. A new router or renamed network may use different credentials from the previous setup.
  3. Forget the network on the affected device, then select it again and join with the current password. This removes that device’s saved profile; it does not change the router’s settings. Apple, Google and Microsoft all include forgetting and rejoining a network among their troubleshooting steps. Microsoft Support, Apple Support, Google Pixel Help

Forget a network in Windows

In Windows, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select the network, choose Forget, and reconnect by selecting it from the Wi-Fi list and entering the password. Menu labels may differ across Windows versions. Microsoft Support

Use other devices to narrow down the cause

Try another device on the new Wi-Fi. If practical, also try the affected device on a different Wi-Fi network. These comparisons help direct troubleshooting, but do not prove which component is at fault.

What happens What to check next
Several devices cannot join the new Wi-Fi Focus on router settings, supported bands and security compatibility. If devices join but have no internet, check the modem/router connection and service.
Only one device cannot join the new Wi-Fi, but it joins another network Check compatibility or configuration between that device and the new router.
The affected device cannot join multiple Wi-Fi networks Focus on the device’s settings, adapter or manufacturer-specific guidance.

Check Wi-Fi band and security compatibility

Routers may offer 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or 6 GHz Wi-Fi. A device must support the band it is trying to use. Microsoft notes that more devices support 2.4 GHz than 5 or 6 GHz; 6 GHz requires a compatible Wi-Fi 6E router and a Wi-Fi 6E client. Older smart-home devices and network adapters may not support every band. If the router offers separate network names for its bands, try one the device supports. Microsoft Support, Microsoft Support: Wi-Fi bands

Security modes can also affect whether an older client joins. Check the router and device manuals for supported modes rather than changing the router to a universal setting. Controls vary by manufacturer. For example, Google says Nest Wifi selects bands based on client compatibility, security, signal strength and distance; changing its WPA3 setting restarts the network and briefly disconnects devices. That behavior is specific to Nest products. Google Nest Help

Restart the modem and router

If several devices are affected, or the router is not behaving normally, restart the network equipment using its manufacturer’s instructions. Restarting temporarily disconnects everyone and anything using the network.

  1. Disconnect power from the modem and router.
  2. Wait at least 30 seconds. Microsoft’s general guidance is, “Wait at least 30 seconds or so.” This is a recommended pause, not a guarantee that every model will be ready on the same schedule.
  3. Restore power to the modem and wait for its status lights to indicate it is back online.
  4. Restore power to the router and wait for it to start, then try the device again.

If the modem and router are one combined unit, treat it as a single device. Microsoft Support

If Wi-Fi connects but there is no internet

Check another device on the same Wi-Fi and look at the modem/router status lights or app. If other devices are also offline, the issue may be with the router’s internet connection or service rather than the affected device’s Wi-Fi connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a computer and suitable Ethernet connection are available, compare its connection over a cable. Microsoft notes that a wired connection can help determine whether a PC’s issue is specific to Wi-Fi. If Ethernet also lacks internet, investigate the router, modem or internet service; if Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, focus on wireless settings or the device’s Wi-Fi connection. Escalate without losing useful information

If basic checks do not resolve the problem, consult the device and router makers’ current instructions. On Windows, check whether the Wi-Fi adapter supports the router’s band and whether the manufacturer provides driver or firmware updates. Before advanced changes such as removing a driver or resetting network components, record the current setup and when the failure occurs. Microsoft Learn recommends capturing a baseline and reproduction time before disruptive troubleshooting. Microsoft Learn

A router factory reset is not the same as restarting it: it can erase customized settings. Do not reset equipment or remove drivers as an early step; follow the manufacturer’s procedure and make sure you can restore any required settings. Router menus, firmware and security options vary by model, and Windows, Apple and Android menu names vary by version.
