If a government says it has taken away your citizenship, first identify the country, the exact document and whether it is a proposed action, a final decision or a record of loss of nationality. There is no universal appeal process or deadline. Preserve the notice and its delivery details, note when you received it, and urgently ask a qualified lawyer or accredited adviser in the issuing country which deadline and route apply to your case.

What to do first

  1. Read the entire notice. Record the issuing authority, the legal ground it gives, the date it was sent and received, whether it is a proposal or final decision, and any appeal or review instructions. Note the named tribunal or court and whether the document says it was issued without advance notice.
  2. Preserve the documents and delivery evidence. Keep the original notice, attachments, envelope, email headers or other delivery records, and relevant citizenship or naturalization papers. Make a dated timeline and retain records that relate to the ground stated in the notice. These steps help organize a case; they do not guarantee that any particular item will be accepted as evidence.
  3. Get jurisdiction-specific advice promptly. Contact a qualified nationality or immigration lawyer, or an appropriately accredited adviser, in the country that issued the decision. Ask which response or filing deadline governs this exact document, what event starts the clock, whether an extension is legally possible, and whether legal aid or fee relief may apply.
  4. Do not assume your location settles the question. For example, UK Home Office guidance says a person may exercise a British citizenship deprivation appeal right from inside or outside the UK. Confirm the filing route and practical requirements for your case.

Do not rely on a general immigration appeal deadline unless an adviser confirms it applies to this citizenship decision. Do not delay while trying to resolve the issue from general online guidance, and do not make factual admissions or statements about the case without advice.

Identify which kind of decision you received

“Citizenship revoked” is everyday shorthand, not a single legal procedure. A document may propose deprivation, make a final deprivation or revocation decision, or determine that nationality has been lost. Those are not necessarily interchangeable. The decision’s wording, legal basis, issuing authority and instructions help identify the correct route.

  • Proposal or information request: The government may still be gathering information or inviting a response before making a final decision. Treat the response date as urgent even if you have not received a final order.
  • Final decision or order: The notice may give an appeal or court-review route. Check how it says to file, where to file and what event starts the deadline.
  • Loss-of-nationality determination: In the United States, a State Department administrative-review process concerns a decision to issue a Certificate of Loss of Nationality, or to approve or deny a request for one. It is not a general appeal route for every situation described as citizenship being revoked.

How do appeal deadlines work?

There is no safe all-purpose number of days to apply. A deadline may run from the date a notice is sent, the date it is received, the date a person learns of a decision or another event set by the governing law. Some systems also have separate deadlines for responding to an agency, appealing a final decision and seeking judicial review. Ask an adviser to identify the applicable rule and calculate the date from the right triggering event.

United Kingdom: deprivation of British citizenship

Section 40A of the British Nationality Act 1981 provides a right of appeal against a decision to deprive a person of citizenship. The usual statutory route is the First-tier Tribunal. If the Secretary of State certifies that the decision relied wholly or partly on information that should not be made public for specified interests, the appeal route is the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC).

For relevant orders made without notice, the Act provides that the appeal period does not begin until the person is given notice that the order has been made. The order date can matter: Home Office guidance notes a different historic rule for orders made before the relevant amendment took effect. Have an adviser check the order and notice dates against the applicable rule.

Do not copy the general GOV.UK immigration-appeal periods into a citizenship deprivation case. That page describes 14 days for the general route from within the UK and 28 days from abroad, but those figures are not established here as the applicable deadline for a deprivation appeal. The page separately identifies revocation of British citizenship as an appealable decision. For a certified case, SIAC publishes guidance about applications and time limits for the cases it covers; its guidance page was last updated in 2020, so confirm the current rule and the notice before relying on a filing period.

Canada: revocation for fraud or concealment

Canadian procedures can include several distinct opportunities to respond. IRCC describes an initial Request for Information with 30 days to respond. If the process continues, its guidance describes a Notification Letter providing 60 days to submit information or evidence. Separately, the Citizenship Act generally gives 60 days after the statutory notice is sent to make written representations, with a possible extension for special reasons. The notice must state the grounds and reasons, the right to make representations and information about the decision route.

These periods are not one combined “appeal deadline.” A separate application for leave for judicial review of a matter under the Act generally must be filed and served within 30 days after notification or awareness; a judge may extend the time for special reasons. That judicial-review period is distinct from both the initial information response and the statutory representations period. Unless the person requests a ministerial decision, the Minister generally seeks a Federal Court declaration before revocation for fraud. Ask counsel which stage the notice concerns and which route is available.

United States: Certificate of Loss of Nationality review

The State Department describes administrative review of a determination to issue a Certificate of Loss of Nationality, or to approve or deny a request for one. An individual may submit a written request with supporting documents, and each case is decided on its merits. The reviewed State Department guidance does not establish one general citizenship-revocation appeal procedure or deadline for every situation a person might describe that way.

A 30-calendar-day deadline in the Board of Immigration Appeals manual concerns filing Form EOIR-26 to appeal an immigration judge’s decision. It is an immigration-court deadline, not a deadline established for the State Department’s loss-of-nationality administrative review.

Which process applies in these examples?

Situation covered by the official guidance Route described Timing point to verify
UK decision to deprive a person of British citizenship Generally an appeal to the First-tier Tribunal; specified certified cases go to SIAC under the statutory framework. Check the decision and notice dates and the applicable rule. For relevant orders made without notice, the appeal clock starts when notice of the order is given. The general 14-day and 28-day immigration appeal periods should not be assumed to govern this case.
Canadian fraud, misrepresentation or concealment process Potential agency response and statutory representations; generally a Federal Court declaration unless the person requests ministerial determination. Judicial review is a separate route. IRCC describes 30 days for an initial Request for Information and 60 days for a later Notification Letter. The Act generally allows 60 days after statutory notice is sent for written representations. Judicial-review leave generally has a separate 30-day filing-and-service period after notification or awareness.
US State Department Certificate of Loss of Nationality determination Administrative review through the State Department process described for that determination. The reviewed State Department guidance does not establish a general filing deadline for every citizenship-loss situation. The BIA’s 30-calendar-day EOIR-26 deadline concerns an immigration judge’s decision, not this State Department review.

The rows describe different legal processes, not equivalent appeals or a ranking of countries. A notice may fall outside the examples, and its legal basis and wording control what advice is needed.

How to find legal help and ask the right questions

Look for a lawyer authorized to practice in the jurisdiction that issued the decision, with experience in nationality or citizenship deprivation and the relevant tribunal or court. If considering a non-lawyer adviser, verify that the person is accredited or otherwise authorized to give that advice in the relevant jurisdiction. A local legal-aid office or the relevant professional regulator can help explain how to locate qualified assistance; availability and eligibility depend on the jurisdiction and case.

When you contact an adviser, have the notice, delivery records and a short timeline ready. Ask:

  • Is this a proposal, a final order, or a loss-of-nationality determination?
  • What exact law and ground does the authority rely on?
  • What is the next response, appeal or review deadline, and what event starts it?
  • Which tribunal, commission, agency or court has authority over this decision?
  • Can the deadline be extended, and what must be done to request an extension?
  • Does being outside the country affect how or where documents must be filed?
  • Do I qualify for legal aid, a fee exemption or another form of assistance?

Fees and representation are separate questions

In the UK, the government says an appeal against deprivation of British citizenship is exempt from the immigration appeal fee. That addresses the appeal fee only; it does not establish eligibility for legal-aid representation or mean that a person will have a lawyer. Ask separately about the cost of representation and any legal-aid rules that apply to your circumstances.

What not to infer from a general guide

  • A deadline from a general immigration appeal page may not apply to a citizenship decision.
  • A response to an agency, a statutory appeal and judicial review are different procedures, even when they concern the same underlying case.
  • An administrative review of a US Certificate of Loss of Nationality determination should not be treated as a universal US revocation appeal.
  • Whether an appeal succeeds depends on the facts and law of the individual case; no general guide can promise an outcome.
