If your carry-on is too big at the airport, ask the airline staff handling your flight what they can do: depending on the carrier and your fare, you may be able to check it at the counter or gate, possibly for a fee, or it may be refused. Check the operating airline’s allowance and do not assume a gate check is available, free, or returned at the aircraft door. Before handing over the bag, remove spare batteries and lithium-battery-powered devices and keep them in the cabin.
What to do right now
- Confirm the rule for your flight. Check the operating airline’s current carry-on size, weight and number limits, including any allowance tied to your fare or priority status. Measure the bag’s outside dimensions, including wheels and handles. For a trip with connections or codeshares, confirm the rule with the airline operating each relevant flight.
- If you are at check-in or bag drop, ask before security. Ask whether the bag can be checked as hold baggage, what it will cost, where to take it, and whether there is still time for it to travel on your flight. Ryanair advises passengers who are unsure whether a bag is too large to check at bag drop before security. Ryanair’s gate baggage guidance explains its process.
- If you are already at the gate, speak to staff promptly. Ask whether the bag must be checked or can still travel in the cabin. Before handing it over, confirm whether it will be tagged, where to leave it, where to collect it, and whether a fee applies. Follow the staff’s instructions before boarding closes.
- Before any gate or planeside check, keep battery items with you. The FAA says to remove spare batteries and lithium-battery-powered devices from bags being checked at the gate or planeside. Its examples include power banks, vapes, phones and laptops. Keep medication, travel documents, valuables and other essentials you need accessible in the cabin as well. Airline and dangerous-goods rules determine what may be checked.
- If the choice is unclear, ask an airline agent or supervisor before boarding closes. Do not leave the bag unattended or assume that turning it sideways or compressing it will override the airline’s sizer or allowance.
Why the airline’s own allowance matters
There is no single carry-on size limit that guarantees acceptance across airlines. The FAA’s passenger baggage guidance says most airlines have a maximum carry-on size of 45 linear inches, meaning height plus width plus depth, but directs travelers to check their airline’s requirements and notes that some rules are stricter. The International Air Transport Association also says allowances can vary by airline, cabin class and aircraft type.
Use those general figures as context, not as permission to board with a particular bag. The operating airline’s current rules for your flight and booking are what matter.

What the airline might do with an oversized bag
Possible outcomes include refusing the bag at the gate, requiring it to travel in the hold, or allowing a gate check under the airline’s stated conditions. Fees and availability vary, so ask staff rather than assuming there is one standard remedy.

Where a gate-checked bag will be returned
Ask the staff member taking the bag where you will collect it. Do not assume it will be waiting at the aircraft door: the return point depends on the airline and operation. IATA says cabin bags may be removed at the gate when there is not enough cabin stowage. Ryanair’s described gate-check process says the bag is collected from the baggage carousel.

- Check the allowance for the airline operating each flight before you leave for the airport, including dimensions, weight and any fare-specific entitlement.
- Measure the suitcase at its widest points, including wheels and handles, and compare its full outside dimensions with the airline’s stated limit.
- If you are unsure, ask at check-in or bag drop whether to add checked baggage before going through security.
- Keep battery-powered essentials, medication, documents and valuables in a cabin bag that you are permitted to carry.
Rules, fees and handling can change and differ by route, fare and aircraft. Use the airline’s current baggage page and ask its staff about your specific flight.
