If you sent money to a scammer through Cash App, open the payment in your Activity feed, report it, and contact Cash App Support immediately. Check whether the payment is still pending and offers a cancel option. If it is complete, report it anyway, but understand that Cash App says completed person-to-person payments are usually final, so a refund is not guaranteed.
Report the payment to Cash App now
- Open the payment: In Cash App, go to the Activity feed and select the payment you sent.
- Report it: Use the payment’s report or support option and explain that you were deceived by a scam. Cash App says you can also go to your profile to report the transaction and reach Support. Ask whether the payment can be stopped or reversed. See Cash App’s scam-response guidance.
- Save the details: Keep the transaction information and any relevant messages or records in case Cash App or your bank asks for them.
Act promptly. The FTC also advises contacting the payment app and asking it to reverse the payment and refund your money; that is a request, not a guarantee of recovery. See the FTC’s mobile payment app guidance.
Check whether the payment is pending or complete
If it is pending
Look at the payment details for a cancel option and use it immediately if available. Contact Support as well and explain that the payment is connected to a scam.

Report it and ask Support what options apply, but set realistic expectations: Cash App says completed person-to-person payments are usually final. Reporting is still worthwhile, but neither a support request nor a bank inquiry guarantees that the money will be returned.

Tell the truth about whether you authorized the transfer
There is an important difference between a payment you personally sent after a scammer tricked you and a transfer made without your permission after someone accessed your account. If you initiated the payment, describe that accurately as a scam. If you did not authorize the transfer, report it to Cash App as unauthorized immediately. Cash App’s U.S. Terms address unauthorized transactions separately and set reporting terms and deadlines; the process and potential protections may differ from those for a payment you authorized.
Contact the bank or card issuer that funded the payment
If the Cash App payment drew from a linked bank account or card, contact that bank or card issuer promptly. Explain how the payment was funded, that you were scammed, and whether you personally initiated it. Ask what dispute or recovery process may apply. Do not assume the institution can reverse a payment you authorized; the outcome depends on the circumstances and its process. Report the scam and secure your accounts
- Report it to the FTC: Submit a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Also report the incident to Cash App through the app.
- Stop contact with the scammer: Do not respond, send more money, or share passwords, your PIN, or sign-in codes with anyone who contacts you.
- Protect exposed accounts: Change any password you disclosed, and change it anywhere else you reused it. Turn on available account security features and review Cash App and linked bank or card activity for unfamiliar transactions.
- Respond to exposed identity information: If you shared personal information, use the FTC’s scam-response guidance to choose identity-recovery steps appropriate to what was exposed.
What to expect from a refund request
There is no assured refund path for a payment you sent because a scammer deceived you. Cash App says completed person-to-person payments are usually final; its guidance notes that a pending payment may have a cancel option. The FTC recommends asking the payment app to reverse and refund the transfer, but that recommendation does not mean reversal is available in every case. Report the payment quickly and ask Cash App and, where relevant, your bank or card issuer what they can do.
