Call your healthcare provider now if you or your child may have been exposed to measles—even if everyone feels well. Tell them when and where the exposure happened, and follow their instructions before visiting a clinic or hospital. Post-exposure options are time-sensitive and depend on individual medical assessment.
What to do immediately after a possible exposure
- Call a healthcare provider immediately. Say that you or your child may have been exposed to measles. If the exposure came from a public notice or a known case, give the location, date, and other details provided. The CDC’s exposure guidance, updated August 5, 2026, advises exposed people to contact their provider right away.
- Share details that affect the assessment. Report the exposed person’s age, vaccination history, pregnancy or immune status, relevant medical conditions, and the date and setting of contact. Mention prior measles vaccine doses and any known lab evidence of immunity.
- Locate vaccination records if convenient, but do not delay the call. A provider may assess immunity using records, age, or laboratory evidence. If immunity is uncertain, a provider may use a blood test.
- Ask how to be evaluated without exposing others. The provider may arrange an appointment or another form of evaluation. Do not arrive unannounced at a clinic, urgent-care center, or hospital if measles is suspected.
Ask promptly about post-exposure options
CDC clinical guidance describes two time-sensitive post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) options. They are not interchangeable, and a healthcare provider or public health authority must determine whether either is appropriate.
| Option | Timing in CDC guidance | How the decision is made |
|---|---|---|
| MMR vaccine | May be given within 72 hours of initial exposure. | A clinician assesses immunity, eligibility, and contraindications. |
| Immune globulin (IG) | May be given within 6 days of exposure. | A clinician or public health authority assesses the person’s risk and whether IG is appropriate. |
These windows come from CDC clinical vaccine guidance. Contact a provider as soon as possible rather than trying to choose an option yourself or waiting to gather records. CDC says MMR vaccine and IG should not be administered at the same time because IG can invalidate the vaccine.
Who needs especially prompt assessment?
Call promptly if the exposed person is an infant younger than 6 months, is pregnant, is severely immunocompromised, or cannot receive a live vaccine because of a medical contraindication. CDC’s clinical overview identifies these kinds of exposed close contacts as groups for whom IG may be prioritized. That does not mean every person in these groups automatically receives IG; a clinician and public health officials assess the circumstances.

Know the exposure risk and watch for symptoms
Measles spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and the virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after that person leaves a space. Someone with measles can spread it from four days before through four days after the rash begins. CDC estimates that up to 90% of close contacts who are not immune may become infected; that is a population-level estimate, not a prediction for every individual exposure. See the CDC explanation of measles transmission.
According to the CDC page updated August 5, 2026, symptoms commonly appear 7–15 days after contact. Early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and red or watery eyes; a rash may follow. If symptoms develop, call the provider before going in so the facility can reduce the chance of exposing other people.

Limit contact with others while you wait for instructions
Ask the provider or local health department whether the exposed person should stay away from school, childcare, work, or other places—and for how long. CDC advises that a person who is not immune and did not receive PEP may need to avoid settings with people at high risk for severe illness, such as schools, hospitals, and childcare centers, for up to 21 days after exposure. The appropriate instructions can depend on the exposure and setting; follow the guidance you receive.

When to seek emergency care
For someone who is sick with measles, seek emergency care for rapidly worsening symptoms or warning signs such as trouble breathing, pain with breathing or coughing, dehydration, persistent fever or headache, confusion or decreased alertness, severe weakness, blue color around the mouth, very low energy, or difficulty feeding in a young child. Call the emergency department before arriving and say measles is suspected. CDC lists these warning signs in its measles symptoms guidance. These are signs that a sick person needs urgent assessment; exposure alone does not mean illness will occur.
