If a painting you bought at a thrift store or estate sale looks valuable, preserve it and its paperwork before trying to clean, repair, sell, or authenticate it. Record what you bought and from whom, photograph the work, research its artist and ownership history, then consult a qualified specialist if the evidence warrants it. A signature or online match is a clue—not proof of authorship or value.
Document the purchase and the painting first
Make a record while the details are fresh. Keep the receipt and any messages or paperwork from the seller or estate-sale company. Note the purchase date, price, location, seller, and any description given at the time of sale.
Create a separate object record with the painting’s known or tentative title, possible artist, medium, dimensions, inscriptions, labels, and visible condition. Photograph the full front and back, plus close-ups of signatures, labels, damage, and markings on the frame. Do not remove labels or alter the painting or frame to inspect it.
Ask the seller or prior owner whether they know the work’s history. Old photographs, receipts, exhibition records, or other paperwork can help establish provenance—the documented history of ownership and handling. The Smithsonian American Art Museum’s guide to researching art recommends starting with what is known and seeking details from the seller, dealer, or previous owner.

Research the artist, marks, and history
Use museum and artist-biography resources to investigate a signature, monogram, label, or other mark. The Smithsonian’s research guide includes resources for signatures, markings, provenance, and exhibition history. Compare details carefully: a signature, label, or image that looks similar to one online can point you toward a lead, but it does not establish who made the painting.
Look for evidence that connects the particular object—not just its apparent style—to an artist and a credible ownership or exhibition history. If the work still appears promising, send clear photographs and your object record to an appraiser or an authority with relevant expertise. For some artists, authentication research may involve the relevant catalogue raisonné, an artist-foundation number, a comprehensive archive, or a certificate from an authority or expert recognized for that artist, as described in IRS Publication 561.

Protect the painting and the evidence
Do not clean, restore, or reframe a potentially important work before speaking with a qualified specialist. Condition and prior restoration can affect valuation, and an appraisal should address them. If conservation work is needed, use a trained professional. The Smithsonian suggests asking a local art museum, gallery, or historical society for reputable conservator referrals; its research resources should not be mistaken for an offer to authenticate or appraise a private painting.

Decide whether and what kind of appraisal to seek
An appraisal is only as useful as the appraiser’s expertise, evidence, and assignment. Before hiring anyone, explain whether you need a market estimate for a possible sale, an insurance valuation, an estate appraisal, or a tax appraisal. These purposes are not interchangeable. Ask what research the fee includes, whether the appraiser has verifiable education and experience with this kind of art, and whether any conflict of interest exists. IRS guidance says a qualified appraisal fee cannot be based on a percentage of the appraised value.
The IRS’s art appraisal guidance describes the information a detailed appraisal may include: an object description, acquisition information, ownership history, proof of authenticity, a professional-quality image, and supporting evidence such as comparable sales and exhibition history.

Judge comparisons by more than a headline price
When evaluating a possible match or a valuation, compare works using the evidence behind them, not just a similar-looking image or an asking price. Relevant factors include:

- Attribution and the basis for authentication.
- Provenance and exhibition record.
- Artist, period, medium, and dimensions.
- Condition and any restoration.
- Comparable realized sales, supported by analysis.
An asking price or a single auction result is weak evidence on its own. IRS guidance cautions that price guides and auction results are not automatically reliable measures of fair market value; they need to be analyzed and supported.

Do not mistake U.S. art-donation thresholds for a painting’s value
IRS Publication 561, dated December 2025, gives these U.S. federal thresholds for charitable deductions involving donated art. They govern tax substantiation, not the market value of a painting, and they do not apply simply because you found or bought one.

These amounts are not estimates, indicators, or minimums for a painting’s sale price.
Pause if the ownership history suggests theft
If credible information raises a theft or ownership concern, hold off on reselling or transferring the painting while you check it. Preserve the receipt and document the work. The FBI’s National Stolen Art File is an online database of stolen art and cultural property submitted by law-enforcement agencies; the FBI says people with information about an item listed there can submit a tip.

The FBI’s instructions to contact police and request database submission are directed to theft victims and institutions, not stated as a universal obligation for purchasers. For a credible concern involving a specific painting, consult local law enforcement or a lawyer familiar with the jurisdiction. Ownership and resale rights depend on the location and facts of the transaction.
What you can—and cannot—conclude
Without evidence about the specific object and review by an appropriate specialist, no one can determine from a signature, label, or apparent resemblance alone who painted it, whether it is authentic, whether the seller had the right to transfer it, or what it is worth. Proceed in order: preserve the work and its records, investigate the clues, and pay for specialist input when the evidence justifies it.
