Stay quiet and well back. Keep people and pets away, switch off lights, and do not touch or approach the turtle, her tracks, or the nest. Contact the wildlife or sea turtle authority responsible for that beach and follow its instructions. Leave the turtle’s route to and from the water clear.
What should I do if I see a sea turtle laying eggs?
- Stop where you are. Do not move closer for a better look or photo. People approaching a nesting turtle may cause her to abandon the attempt, according to NOAA Fisheries’ guidance on helping sea turtles.
- Quietly move others and pets away. Do not gather a crowd around the turtle.
- Turn off artificial lights and keep noise down. Avoid phone lights, flashlights, and camera flash. Artificial light can disturb nesting turtles and disorient hatchlings; see NOAA Fisheries’ loggerhead turtle guidance.
- Call the authority responsible for that beach. Report the beach name or precise location and what you observed. Do not approach the nest to mark it.
- Keep the route to the water open. If you stay nearby, do so only if you can remain quiet, avoid obstructing the turtle, and prevent a crowd. Follow the local agency’s directions.
Who should I call?
There is no universal sea turtle hotline. Use the wildlife agency or sea turtle program responsible for the beach. If you are unsure which agency serves that location, check the local government or wildlife authority directory rather than guessing a number.
| Location | Official contact and guidance |
|---|---|
| Texas coast | The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s April 2026 Texas coast notice says to report nesting sightings at 1-866-TURTLE-5 (1-866-887-8535). It advises waiting for a biologist after reporting when possible. This number and procedure are specific to Texas. |
| Israel | The Israel Nature and Parks Authority’s sea turtle reporting guidance lists *3639. The contact is specific to Israel. |
| Florida | The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission lists Wildlife Alert at 888-404-FWCC (3922) for people disturbing a turtle or nest and for injured, dead, or harassed turtles. See FWC’s sea turtle guidance. This is a Florida contact. |
How far away should I stay?
Follow the local authority’s distance guidance; recommendations differ by place and context. A U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service notice for Texas advises staying 100 feet away, while its April 2023 Hawaiʻi and Pacific Islands notice advises at least 10 feet. These are location-specific recommendations, not interchangeable worldwide rules. If you do not know the local rule, stay farther back and do not block the turtle.
Should I mark the nest or protect the tracks?
Do not dig, cover, move, or handle the nest, and do not erase or disturb the tracks. Tell the agency where the turtle is without approaching the nesting site. Local instructions can differ: the Texas notice describes gently marking a broad area with natural debris, without covering the nest, if a person who reported the sighting cannot wait for a biologist. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority instead advises documenting the location and leaving the nest and traces undisturbed. Follow the directions for the beach where you are; do not adopt another region’s procedure.

What if the turtle is injured, stranded, or entangled?
Contact trained local responders rather than attempting to treat, free, or move the turtle yourself. NOAA Fisheries’ loggerhead turtle guidance directs people to contact trained responders for animals in distress. Keep people back and leave access clear while you follow the agency’s instructions.

Nesting is a vulnerable moment: approach, light, or noise can disturb the turtle, and an obstructed route can interfere with her return to the sea. As U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service biologist Cynthia Rubio said in the agency’s April 2026 Texas coast notice, “The public can help protect this endangered species by being extra vigilant and driving cautiously on the beach, so that vehicles do not inadvertently collide with nesting turtles during the day or emerging hatchlings at night from late March through September.”
