Assume your Ledger Secret Recovery Phrase is exposed. Do not enter it again anywhere—not in a purported Ledger Support page, app, recovery tool, or computer. A device PIN change does not replace a compromised phrase. First move any assets that remain to accounts you control that were not created from that phrase; only then reset the device and create new accounts.
Act quickly to protect assets that remain
Anyone who obtains your recovery phrase may be able to control the accounts derived from it. Treat the phrase as compromised even if the fake site only appeared to ask for it and you have not noticed a theft. Do not wait to see whether funds move before securing what is still there.
Ledger’s official instructions are to transfer crypto to temporary accounts you control, such as an exchange account, a software wallet, or an account derived from a different recovery phrase. These are examples, not a ranking: the guide does not compare their security or say which destination is safest for every reader. Choose an account that is not derived from the exposed phrase, and carefully verify its address and that it supports the asset and network you are sending.

After the funds are moved, replace the exposed setup
- Remove or rename the emptied old accounts. This helps prevent you from accidentally sending future funds to accounts controlled by the exposed phrase. If you need the transaction history, export it before removing accounts.
- Reset the Ledger device. Ledger says a reset removes the private keys, apps, and settings stored on the device. It does not undo transfers or protect funds that remain in accounts derived from the exposed phrase, so do this after moving the assets you can.
- Update Ledger OS and create new accounts. Generate a new recovery phrase and create accounts derived from that new phrase, rather than reusing the exposed one.
- Transfer assets to the new accounts. Verify each destination address and network before sending. Keep the new recovery phrase secret and offline.
Never type the new phrase into software
Do not enter the replacement phrase into Ledger Wallet, another app, a website, or a computer—even if the page or person claims to be Ledger Support. Keep it offline and consider a phrase-storage solution for preserving it safely. A reset device may be usable for the new setup; buying another device is not inherently required by Ledger’s instructions.

If an attacker has already moved crypto
A device reset or new recovery phrase cannot reverse an on-chain transfer that has already completed. Ledger’s guide does not promise recovery of funds taken by an attacker. Focus on securing any assets that remain and do not give your phrase to anyone claiming they can recover the transferred crypto.
