If you encounter a humpback whale, slow down early, keep a steady course, and give it space. The Environment Society of Oman’s whale-watching guide recommends slowing at 500 metres, staying below 4 knots, and keeping at least 100 metres from a whale. These are useful regional guidelines, not rules established here as binding across every Arabian Sea jurisdiction; check current local requirements and follow stricter directions from authorities or your captain.
What to do as soon as you spot a whale
- Slow down at a distance. The Environment Society of Oman guide recommends reducing speed when you are 500 metres away and then maintaining a constant speed below 4 knots. Avoid sudden changes in speed or direction.
- Stay out of its route. Keep at least 100 metres away, as the Oman guide advises. If an approach is necessary, come from the side and slightly behind. Do not approach head-on or from directly behind, cut across the whale’s path, overtake it, or wait where it is travelling.
- Do not pursue or provoke it. Never chase, harass, rev the engine to prompt a response, or drive between animals. Do not approach a calf or a whale that is feeding or resting.
- End the viewing period calmly. The guide recommends limiting observation to 30 minutes. Leave slowly and keep the low speed until you are at least 100 metres away.
These distances, speeds, and time limits come from Oman’s guide. The International Whaling Commission’s Oman profile describes the 2014 guidelines as draft guidance under review for formal adoption, so do not assume they are binding law throughout the Arabian Sea. Check current local rules before boating and comply with any stricter local instruction.
What if the whale swims toward your boat?
If your boat is stopped and a whale approaches, remain where you are. The Oman guide says not to re-engage the propeller until the animals have moved away. Wait for a safe moment before restarting, and do not maneuver toward the whale or use the engine to make it move.

This advice is distinct from the guide’s note about dolphins: it says that if dolphins choose to bow ride, maintain course and speed. That dolphin-specific instruction should not be treated as humpback guidance.

When should you stop watching and leave?
Give the whale more space and end the encounter if it appears to avoid the boat or shows signs of disturbance. The Oman guide identifies these behaviors as reasons for concern:
- Repeated changes in direction.
- Sudden, repeated, or prolonged dives.
- Tight groups swimming away.
- Aggressive tail or flipper slaps.
Leave slowly rather than accelerating away or turning sharply. Keep the vessel on a steady course and at low speed until you have cleared the recommended distance.

Why careful handling matters in the Arabian Sea
The Arabian Sea humpback whale is a geographically isolated subpopulation. The IWC describes it as Endangered and numbering fewer than 100 individuals; it identifies entanglement in fishing gear, vessel strikes, underwater noise, and habitat loss or degradation among the threats. A historical estimate attributed to Minton et al. 2008 was 82 individuals, with a 95% confidence interval of 60–111, as cited by the Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force. That is a historical estimate, not a current census.
