Don’t keep retrying the same password. Work out which kind of failure you have: a forgotten password, an unavailable passkey, a missing 2-step verification code, an email address you can’t reach, a console or network fault, or a suspension. Each has a different fix, and a few of them can only be resolved by PlayStation Support. The steps below follow PlayStation’s official US support guidance. Menu names and options can differ by region and change over time.

Recover a forgotten password
Your PlayStation sign-in ID is the email address on the account, so recovery depends on reaching that mailbox.
- Open Account Management in a web browser and choose Trouble Signing in?, then Recover Your Account.
- Enter your sign-in ID (the email address).
- Open the email PlayStation sends and follow the secure link to set a new password.
The email can take a few minutes to arrive. Check spam and junk folders, and make sure you typed the address exactly. If you enter an address that isn’t the account’s sign-in ID, the reset email won’t reach the right inbox. PS5 and PS4 also offer recovery routes from their sign-in screens, if you’d rather start on the console.

Fix a passkey that won’t work
If the same verification method is registered on another device, sign in from that device and register a new passkey. If you have no other device with it registered, PlayStation directs you to its Online Assistant. If a passkey is causing trouble on a device or service where PlayStation recommends password sign-in, follow PlayStation’s official instructions to switch back to your password.
Fix missing 2-step verification codes
The code goes to your registered mobile number or comes from your authenticator app. If a text doesn’t arrive:

- Restart the phone.
- Check that airplane mode is off and that you have mobile signal.
- If that fails, use a saved backup code. PlayStation provides 10, and each works only once.
If you have no backup codes and can’t use the registered phone number, contact PlayStation through the Online Assistant. There is no legitimate way to bypass 2-step verification yourself, and you should be wary of anyone offering one.
Credentials are right but sign-in still fails
A failure isn’t always about the password. Work through these in order:

- Verify the email. Search the sign-in inbox for “PlayStation verify”. An unverified sign-in ID can block access.
- Update system software on the PS5 or PS4.
- Restart the console and your router.
- Use a wired connection if you’re on Wi-Fi.
- Try Account Management in a browser. If it works there, the problem is probably the console or network. If it fails there too, the problem is the account itself.
- Check for suspension. A suspension can block sign-in. PlayStation says it generally emails the reason and duration, so look in the sign-in inbox, including spam, and check PlayStation’s official support status page.
When you have to contact PlayStation
PlayStation’s own wording is: “If you’re having any of the following problems, you’ll need to contact us using our Online Assistant.” That applies when:
- You can’t access the email address needed for a password reset or 2-step verification email.
- You’ve forgotten which email is your sign-in ID.
- You’ve lost both your registered phone access and your backup codes.
- You have no alternate device for a lost passkey.
- Your sign-in ID, online ID or password seems to have changed without your authorization.
Treat unexpected changes as a possible compromise and go through PlayStation’s official recovery and security steps. Don’t pay unofficial “recovery services”. PlayStation’s documented routes involve only account recovery, security settings, email or verification access, software updates, network troubleshooting and official support. No special hardware is needed.

Prevent a repeat
- Keep the sign-in email address current and accessible.
- Store your backup codes somewhere safe and separate from your phone.
- Register your verification method on more than one device if you use passkeys.
