If you can’t sell a meme coin or withdraw a balance, don’t send more money to unlock it. First work out where the asset is actually held: in a self-custody wallet, at an independently verifiable exchange, or only as a number on a website or app. A displayed balance—especially on a site introduced by someone else—does not prove that withdrawable cryptocurrency exists.
First, find out where the coin or balance is held
The next step depends on where you see the balance and whether a transaction was actually submitted to a blockchain. Use this comparison to narrow down what you know; it cannot by itself confirm that a platform or token is legitimate.

These situations are not interchangeable. A token contract or liquidity condition, an exchange restriction, a wallet or network error, and possible account or wallet compromise call for different responses. The coin name alone does not identify the cause. For a technical diagnosis of an on-chain attempt, the relevant details include the blockchain network, token contract address, transaction hash if one exists, and the wallet’s exact error.

Do not pay a person or suspicious platform that demands an advance “tax,” unlock fee, penalty, deposit, or cash pickup before releasing an investment balance. This is different from a normal blockchain transaction fee displayed transparently by a wallet when you are signing a legitimate transaction. A fee request sent by a person or platform to unlock a displayed investment balance is not proof that the balance is real. Verify any organization using contact details you find independently on its official site or app—not a link or phone number supplied by the person making the demand.
FBI IC3 describes schemes in which a platform shows fictitious profits, then imposes arbitrary fees or taxes at withdrawal; allowing a small early withdrawal can be part of the deception. FBI IC3 information on investment fraud.

Preserve evidence before an account or conversation disappears
Save records before closing an account or blocking a contact. Keep copies somewhere you control, and do not edit screenshots in a way that removes useful details.

- Platform and app names, website URLs, and the dates you used them.
- Messages, emails, instructions, phone numbers, social profiles, and names or company details provided by the people involved.
- Wallet addresses, transaction hashes or IDs, the blockchain network, dates, and amounts sent or requested.
- Screenshots of the displayed balance, withdrawal attempts, error messages, and payment demands.

Report suspected fraud through the right official channel
If the suspected scheme has a U.S. connection, the FBI directs victims of investment schemes to report through its Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Reach the reporting site independently and include the records you preserved. FBI guidance on reporting cryptocurrency investment schemes.
IC3 is U.S. federal guidance, not a universal reporting channel. If you are elsewhere, contact the appropriate local financial or law-enforcement reporting service. For a dispute with a legitimate exchange, use its independently verified support channel and, where applicable, your local regulator or consumer complaint process. A report documents what happened; it does not guarantee that funds will be recovered.

The FBI reported that victims lost more than $2.5 billion to cryptocurrency investment fraud in 2022. That figure is context about investment fraud overall—not a statistic about meme coins or failed withdrawals specifically. FBI IC3 alert citing 2022 cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses.

Ignore unsolicited offers to recover your cryptocurrency
Be wary of anyone who contacts you unexpectedly and guarantees tracing, seizure, or return of cryptocurrency, especially if they ask for an upfront fee. The FBI warns that recovery scammers may take an initial payment, stop communicating, or demand more money; private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders. What is—and isn’t—established about withdrawal-fee schemes
In a September 29, 2026 announcement, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission described complaints alleging fictitious profits on investment platforms and fraudulent advance fees demanded from people trying to withdraw. These were allegations in an enforcement announcement, not findings that every such platform or withdrawal restriction is fraudulent. SEC announcement on alleged investment-fraud schemes.
Neither an inability to sell nor a blocked withdrawal, by itself, establishes the cause in your case. The facts here do not identify your token, contract, wallet, exchange, or jurisdiction, and they do not establish a technical fix for a particular contract, liquidity pool, account restriction, or wallet error. Avoid treating a balance shown on an unfamiliar site as proof that you control on-chain funds.
