If a utility account is still in your name after you move, contact that provider directly and request that service be closed or transferred effective on the correct date. Give a forwarding address, ask for a final bill and written confirmation, and keep a record of your request. Moving out does not necessarily close an account automatically.
Contact every provider and request a dated closure or transfer
Make a list of each utility billed in your name—such as electricity, gas, water or sewer, and waste—and contact each provider separately. One company’s account change does not necessarily close another service.
- Ask to close or transfer the account. Give the old service address and the date you moved out or want responsibility to end. Ask whether the account can be transferred to your new address or must be closed and reopened.
- Provide a forwarding address and contact details. Ask when and how the final bill will arrive, and how any deposit or outstanding balance will be handled. Maryland’s Public Service Commission says a mailing address for the final bill is required when requesting discontinuation; Portland’s utility also asks for the address where the final bill should be sent. See the Maryland Public Service Commission consumer FAQs and the City of Portland’s start, stop, or transfer service instructions.
- Ask for the provider’s effective end date and confirmation. Request a reference number or written confirmation showing the date the account will close or transfer. Some providers require advance notice, and procedures vary; do not assume another provider’s notice period applies to yours.
Maryland’s regulator says billing may continue until the customer notifies the utility or a new customer applies. Confirm that the provider’s records show the date you intend, rather than assuming your move-out date ended billing.

Submit a final meter reading if the provider accepts one
If the utility uses a meter you can read and accepts customer readings, record it on your last service day. Take a dated photo or write down the reading, then submit it using the provider’s specified method. The Utility Regulator for Northern Ireland recommends taking a final reading on move-out day; its moving-home guidance is specific to that jurisdiction. Not every utility has a customer-readable meter or accepts customer-submitted readings, so check first.

Keep records and check the final bill
Save the date you requested closure, any confirmation or reference number, the agreed effective date, meter-reading evidence, and written messages from the provider. When the final bill arrives, check that its service dates and charges match the account end date you agreed. If bills continue or charges appear to cover time after that date, contact the provider, share your records, and ask it to review the account and itemize the charges.
Check your lease and local rules if responsibility is disputed
Do not assume the landlord or next occupant automatically took over an account. Alberta’s tenant guide says the account holder should close the account and coordinate the final service date; notice requirements may differ by retailer. New Zealand Tenancy Services, by contrast, says landlords pay costs that remain payable while a tenant is not living at the property and bills shared between tenancies. These are jurisdiction-specific examples, not rules that apply everywhere. Check your lease and the rules where the property is located.

If a landlord asks you to leave service active, ask the utility directly what that means for the account holder’s responsibility. Put any arrangement and end date in writing, and check that it is consistent with your lease and local tenancy rules. A promise from a landlord to pay does not by itself show that the utility has changed the customer of record. If you cannot resolve a dispute, contact a locally appropriate tenant-advice or utility-consumer service. Alberta’s Move-Out Utility Guide for Tenants identifies its Utilities Consumer Advocate and Residential Tenancy Dispute Resolution Service as support options.
