Save evidence, report the imitation through the platform’s current process, and verify any request for money or sensitive information through a contact method you already trust. If the content is a nonconsensual intimate image, use the separate U.S. takedown process described below; its 48-hour rule does not apply to ordinary voice clones or deepfakes.
First, identify which response track applies
The right next step depends on what the imitation depicts and how it is being used. The FBI uses “deepfake” broadly for AI- or machine-learning-generated or manipulated media, including audio and video. The two tracks below are different: ordinary impersonation generally follows platform reporting and fraud-prevention steps, while qualifying nonconsensual intimate imagery has a specific U.S. removal process.

What to do right away
1. Preserve the evidence
Before a post or message disappears, record its URL, the account or user name, when and where you found it, and any related messages, threats, email addresses, or phone numbers. Save a copy of the content where practical and keep an untouched original. The FBI recommends retaining information in photo or video manipulation and sextortion incidents; see its IC3 guidance. Do not forward or repost intimate material just to document it.
2. Check for fraud and protect people who may be targeted
If the imitation is being used to request money, credentials, or sensitive information, contact the supposed sender through a phone number or account you had already confirmed was theirs. Do not rely on a new number, a familiar-sounding voice, or a convincing face as proof of identity. The FBI warned on May 15, 2025, that AI-generated voice messages had been used in impersonation campaigns and advised independent verification through a previously confirmed channel; see its alert on impersonated U.S. officials.

If other people are likely to receive the fake request, warn them through a trusted channel and tell them how to verify any follow-up request. If you have evidence that someone accessed one of your accounts, change the affected credentials and secure the account. An imitation alone does not establish that your account was hacked.
3. Report the content to the platform
Use the service’s current reporting flow for impersonation, privacy, or manipulated media. Include the evidence you preserved and keep the submission confirmation or case number. Platform names, forms, and rules differ, and ordinary impersonation reports do not have one universal removal deadline.

4. Escalate threats, extortion, or financial loss
For threats, blackmail, stalking, financial loss, or other suspected crime, contact local law enforcement. In relevant U.S. cyber-enabled cases, you can also submit a report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). If a minor is involved in sexual exploitation, the FBI IC3 guidance points to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) as a specialist reporting resource.

If the content is an intimate image: the U.S. removal route
For a U.S. reader, the TAKE IT DOWN Act provides a specific removal process for qualifying nonconsensual intimate imagery, including qualifying AI-generated or altered images. A covered platform must remove qualifying content and known identical copies within 48 hours after receiving a valid request. This is not a general guarantee for voice clones, ordinary deepfakes, or content outside the law’s scope. The FTC explains the process in its September 2026 guidance.

- Submit a request to the platform where the image appears, following its current reporting instructions and providing the information needed to make a valid request.
- Keep a copy of the request and its confirmation. If a covered platform does not meet its removal duty, report the failure to the FTC using its image-based abuse guidance.
- Consider StopNCII.org, which creates a digital fingerprint of an image and shares the fingerprint—not the image—with participating platforms. It is limited to participating services and is not a general voice-clone or impersonation detector.
What legal options depend on
There is no single rule that automatically gives someone ownership of every AI imitation of their voice or likeness, and protections vary by jurisdiction and circumstances. The available options can depend on whether the conduct involves fraud, intimate imagery, commercial exploitation, defamation, privacy, or another legal issue. The U.S. Copyright Office’s 2024 report on digital replicas discusses policy questions; it is not individualized legal advice.
