If someone has created or shared an intimate AI deepfake of you without your permission, report it to the platform and request removal. For covered platforms, the federal TAKE IT DOWN Act applies to real, altered, and AI-generated intimate images: platforms must remove the image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. If someone is threatening or blackmailing you, prioritize your safety and report the person separately.
First, handle threats and immediate safety
If the person is demanding money, more images, or access to your accounts or devices, do not comply. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises stopping communication, blocking the person, and telling someone you trust. Do not pay, send more images, or provide financial-account or device access. Report the person to local law enforcement and the FBI. If you face immediate physical danger, contact local emergency services.
If the image involves someone under 18, the FTC also identifies the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) CyberTipline as a reporting option. Follow the reporting service’s directions and do not copy, forward, or circulate the image.

The FTC defines image-based abuse to include creating, sharing, or threatening to share an intimate image without permission. The image may be real, digitally altered, or generated with AI. The FTC’s consumer guidance says, “Only platforms can take down intimate photos and videos shared without your consent.”

- Open the post’s report menu or the platform’s support/help center. Choose the option for nonconsensual intimate imagery if available.
- Make a clear request to remove the image. Include the post URL or account name and follow the platform’s instructions. The exact reporting route can vary by platform and account status; StopNCII’s platform-contact directory can help adults find contact routes.
- Keep the platform’s report confirmation or case number, if provided, along with the URL or account name and the date and time you reported it. Do so only when safe. Avoid forwarding or reposting the image.
For covered platforms, the TAKE IT DOWN Act requires a way to request removal and removal of the image and known identical copies within 48 hours after a valid request. This applies to intimate images, including AI-generated and altered images; it does not guarantee removal of every copy from the entire internet.
Use a spread-limiting service suited to the person depicted

If the platform does not remove the image
If a covered platform misses the 48-hour deadline, has no removal process, or its process is broken, report the platform to the FTC at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. This is a report about the platform’s compliance, not a report of the person who posted the image.

Report the person responsible separately to local law enforcement or the FBI at tips.fbi.gov or 1-800-CALL-FBI. For an image involving a minor, the NCMEC CyberTipline is also an option. Reporting does not guarantee a particular investigation or outcome.

Know what this process covers
The federal removal process described here concerns nonconsensual intimate images on covered online platforms. It does not establish the same process for every fake voice, political clip, impersonation account, or other nonsexual deepfake. For those cases, use the platform’s relevant impersonation or manipulated-media reporting process and seek local advice where needed.
The FTC began enforcement under the TAKE IT DOWN Act in May 2026. State laws and remedies can differ. For advice about possible damages, criminal complaints, or responses at work or school—or for help with an ongoing threat—contact qualified local legal aid, law enforcement, or a victim-support organization.
