Rain alone does not automatically cancel an outdoor festival. Check the event’s official updates, follow staff instructions, and treat lightning or other dangerous weather as a safety issue—not just a change in comfort. If an evacuation is called, go to the venue’s designated solid, enclosed shelter; a tent is not safe thunderstorm shelter. Ticket options depend on the specific event and whether it pauses, relocates, shortens, or cancels the program.
First, find out whether the event is continuing
Use the festival’s official website, app, email or text alerts, and on-site stage or public-address announcements. Social media may also carry updates, but rely on the channels the organizer identifies for live instructions. At Welcome to Rockville, for example, weather notices may arrive by stage audio or video, app push notification, or social media—and an evacuation notice may come before the weather is visible. Other festivals may use different channels. Check the event’s published weather procedure and follow the directions being given at your venue.
Do not assume that an event is canceled because rain has started, or that it is safe to stay because the sky looks clear. Festivals may continue in ordinary rain when conditions are safe, but severe thunderstorms, lightning, high winds, hail, flooding, or directions from emergency authorities can prompt a pause, evacuation, or cancellation. The organizer’s live notice—not your own assessment of the sky—should guide your next move.

If a storm warning or evacuation is announced
- Listen and act promptly. Stop what you are doing and follow staff, security, and emergency-service instructions. An evacuation notice may arrive before a hazard is visible so there is time to move.
- Use the designated shelter and route. Check the event map and follow directions for your location and attendee type. Do not assume another festival’s shelter plan applies to yours; routes can differ for people arriving by car, rideshare, or camping.
- Do not shelter in a tent during a thunderstorm. The National Weather Service says, “No one is safe outside of a solid enclosed structure during any thunderstorm; tents are not suitable shelters.” Go to the venue’s designated solid, enclosed shelter rather than waiting in a tent. Read the National Weather Service’s outdoor-event weather checklist.
- Use your event’s lightning guidance. Roskilde Festival’s thunderstorm FAQ directs attendees to seek shelter before a storm reaches the festival area, avoid open areas and trees, and put down umbrellas during a thunderstorm. An umbrella permitted for ordinary rain is not a substitute for shelter from lightning. Check Roskilde Festival’s guidance and follow the instructions for your own event.
- Reconnect with your group once you are safe. Use the meeting place you agreed on before the event, rather than trying to cross an evacuated or restricted area to find one another.
The National Weather Service checklist gives planners examples such as considering thunderstorms with lightning within an 8-mile radius and adding a 25% safety factor to the time needed to notify and move attendees. These are planning examples for event organizers, not universal thresholds for attendees to apply themselves.

Prepare before you leave
- Read the event’s weather and access information. Find its current status, weather procedure, map, exits, designated shelter, and any accessibility or access-center guidance.
- Save the official update channel. Install the event app if used, enable its alerts, and make sure your phone can receive the organizer’s notices.
- Make a group plan. Agree on a meeting place in case you are separated during a move or evacuation.
- Plan for evacuation time if you need assistance. Contact the event’s accessibility or access center in advance if moving to shelter may take extra time or require support.
- Check item rules before packing. A packable poncho or rain jacket may be useful, but permitted rain gear varies. Newport Folk Festival recommends raingear for its 2026 rain-or-shine event and allows personal umbrellas in rain only when they are closed during performances. Do not assume another festival has the same rule. See Newport Folk Festival’s event information.
What rain can mean for your ticket
There is no universal rain-refund rule. A temporary weather hold, a shortened program, a relocation, and a fully canceled festival day can receive different treatment under the event’s ticket terms. Read the terms for your ticket and the organizer’s notice for the specific disruption rather than relying on another festival’s policy.
| Festival example | Published weather and ticket information |
|---|---|
| Country Thunder | Its policy says performances may proceed in varying weather when safe. It excludes refunds for weather that does not cancel an entire festival day, delays, and temporary evacuations; it describes a remedy for an entire canceled day under the event’s terms. Read Country Thunder’s current policy. |
| Newport Folk Festival (2026) | Its 2026 information says events take place rain or shine, programming may be interrupted for severe weather, and posted sales are final. Read the festival’s information. |
| Spoleto Festival USA (2026 season) | For outdoor performances, moving indoors, postponing for lightning, or canceling or rescheduling can trigger direct updates and ticket instructions. Check Spoleto Festival USA’s current-season information. |
These are examples of different organizer policies, not rules that apply to other festivals. The cited policies do not establish a general legal entitlement to a refund; that depends on the event’s terms and applicable law.
