If your orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses cause blurry or reduced vision, discomfort, pain, redness, excessive tearing, unusual discharge, halos, or light sensitivity, remove them immediately. If the problem continues after removal, keep the lenses out and promptly contact the eye care practitioner who prescribed them. Do not put the lenses back in just because symptoms briefly improve.
What to do right now
- Remove the lenses. FDA patient labeling for Ortho-K lenses instructs wearers to remove lenses immediately when they have symptoms such as vision changes, discomfort, pain, redness, excessive tearing, unusual discharge, halos, or light sensitivity.
- Leave them out if symptoms continue. Contact your prescribing eye care practitioner promptly for guidance. FDA labeling warns that problems such as infection or a corneal ulcer may need to be identified and treated by a professional; symptoms alone cannot establish the cause.
- Do not resume wear without direction. Do not treat persistent or worsening symptoms as ordinary adaptation, and do not rely on temporary improvement as a reason to reinsert the lenses. Follow the practitioner’s instructions about when, or whether, to wear them again.
- Use only the prescribed lens-care routine. Follow the instructions for your specific lenses and care products. Do not use water, saline, or rewetting drops to disinfect lenses; do not reuse or top off old solution; and do not store lenses or rinse the case in water.
There is no universal number of hours that is safe to wait for symptoms to resolve. If symptoms persist or worsen after lens removal, professional assessment is the appropriate next step.
Which symptoms matter?
FDA-approved patient labeling lists several possible adverse effects of Ortho-K lenses. Remove the lenses if you experience any of the following:

- Stinging, burning, itching, pain, reduced comfort, or a foreign-body sensation
- Redness, excessive tearing, or unusual discharge
- Halos or sensitivity to light
The symptoms do not tell you by themselves whether the cause is a lens fit or care issue, a temporary vision effect, or a more serious problem. In particular, do not assume that blur is harmless if it is new, painful, worsening, or persistent.

Can blurry vision be a normal Ortho-K effect?
Vision can vary
Ortho-K lenses are specially designed rigid gas permeable lenses that temporarily change the cornea’s curvature. They are worn overnight and removed on waking; the effect is temporary and depends on following the practitioner’s prescribed wearing schedule.
FDA-approved information for a specific Ortho-K lens describes blurry or variable vision, especially late in the day, as a possible effect. It also says that blur and how long it lasts may decrease with time. That general information does not establish that an individual episode is harmless, particularly when it is new, painful, worsening, or persistent.

Overnight wear has contact-lens risks
Ortho-K carries contact-lens risks that include irritation, infection, pain, redness, and distorted vision. FDA-approved patient information notes that corneal infection risk is greater for people who sleep in their lenses than for people who do not. The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Preferred Practice Pattern likewise notes increased microbial keratitis risk with overnight Ortho-K wear. These risk statements do not mean that any particular symptom proves infection or predict an individual wearer’s likelihood of developing one.

Use the care directions for your actual lenses
Care products and procedures need to match the lenses prescribed for you. Follow the lens-specific labeling and your practitioner’s directions rather than switching disinfectants or assuming that a product or storage case is compatible. Water must not be used to store lenses or rinse the case, and saline or rewetting drops are not disinfectants.
