If drain cleaner is still sitting in a clogged drain, don’t add another product, plunge, or put a snake into the drain. Keep people and pets away from the liquid, check the exact cleaner’s label for its wait and flushing directions, and contact a plumber if the clog remains after the label-approved procedure. If anyone has been exposed, contact Poison Control right away.
What to do right now
- Stop adding products. Do not pour in another drain cleaner or household cleaner. Drano warns that mixing its Kitchen Gel with other household cleaners can cause hazardous fumes or a violent reaction. If fumes or gas are released, leave the area immediately; ventilate only if you can do so without delaying your exit. Drano Kitchen Gel safety directions
- Keep clear of the standing liquid. Keep children and pets away, and avoid touching or splashing the water. Drain cleaners can contain corrosive acids or alkalis that may cause serious burns or tissue injury if used incorrectly. - Do not plunge or insert a tool while cleaner may remain. A plunger can send the product back toward you. Drano’s snake-and-gel instructions also say to use the tool before pouring gel, not after. - Read the exact container label. Use only its stated waiting time, flush temperature, and drain-use directions. Do not assume that another brand’s or formula’s timing applies.
Follow the product’s wait and flush directions
There is no universal waiting time or flushing method for drain cleaner. Formulas and directions differ, so use the instructions on the container you poured. For example, Drano Kitchen Gel says to wait 15 minutes, or 30 minutes for a tough problem, then flush with hot—but not boiling—water. Check that the product is permitted for the affected drain. Drano’s FAQ says its gel clog removers are for listed kitchen and bathroom sinks, showers, or bathtubs, not toilets; other products may have different restrictions. Drano Drain Cleaning FAQs

If the drain is still clogged afterward
If the clog remains after the label’s permitted wait-and-flush procedure, stop rather than repeating steps beyond what the label allows. Drano’s FAQ advises consulting a plumber if the clog persists after its stated repeat-and-flush process. If cleaner gets on someone or fumes are inhaled
For swallowing, eye or skin contact, or inhaled fumes, use webPOISONCONTROL or call the U.S. Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. Poison Control describes the service as free, confidential, and available 24 hours a day. Follow the first-aid directions on the exact product label as well; instructions can vary by formula.
For its Kitchen Gel, Drano says to rinse eyes immediately with water for 15 minutes; remove contaminated clothing and flush skin with water for 15 minutes; and, if swallowed, rinse the mouth, drink a cup of milk or water, do not induce vomiting, and call Poison Control or a physician.
