Shut down your PC, unplug it from power, and don’t try to glue, bend, or remove anything from the graphics card. A loose plastic shroud fragment, a detached section of the heatsink, and a component that has come away from the PCB are different problems; photos and the card’s exact model help its manufacturer identify the right next step.
What to do first
- Power down and unplug the PC. Leave the loose piece and graphics card undisturbed. Avoid running the card until the part has been identified; the available manufacturer guidance does not establish that a particular card is safe to operate with a piece detached.
- Photograph the piece and the card. Take clear photos of the detached part, the area it came from, and the card’s label. Don’t force a fragment back into place to make it easier to photograph.
- Record the complete make and model. Establish whether it is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition or a partner model from a company such as ASUS, MSI, or GIGABYTE. If the card came inside a prebuilt computer, record the system maker and model too.
- Contact the appropriate support channel before disassembly. Provide the photos, serial number, purchase documentation, and a short description of what happened. Ask for instructions before removing the cooler or attempting a repair.
What might have come loose?
Appearance alone may not show whether the piece is cosmetic or part of the cooling hardware. The official support guidance available does not provide a model-by-model RTX 4090 identification guide, so don’t assume that a fragment is harmless or diagnose it from a photo without the card maker’s input.

Shroud or trim
A piece of outer plastic may be part of the card’s shroud, but its exact function and attachment depend on the model. Photograph where it separated and ask the manufacturer whether the part can be replaced or repaired on its own.

Heatsink or cooler assembly
A detached fin-stack or other cooler component is a different concern from a cosmetic fragment. NVIDIA Support says replacing a graphics card’s fan and heatsink “is not an easy task” and warns that excessive force during heatsink removal can damage the GPU. Don’t remove the cooler just to investigate.

PCB-mounted component
If the piece appears to include a component mounted on the circuit board, or the board itself looks damaged, leave the card untouched and contact support or a qualified repairer. ASUS lists detached or missing PCB components among examples of damage that may affect warranty service; that example is not a decision about an individual claim. ASUS graphics-card CID guidance
Warranty and support depend on who made or sold the card
A loose part does not guarantee a warranty replacement. Eligibility depends on the card, region, purchase history, cause of damage, and the manufacturer’s terms. Start with the company responsible for the specific card rather than assuming every RTX 4090 uses NVIDIA’s warranty process.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition
NVIDIA’s warranty page includes the RTX 4090 Founders Edition and states three years from purchase for manufacturing defects or hardware component failures, subject to the product-specific warranty. NVIDIA says it may repair or replace an eligible defective product; exclusions include problems not specifically related to manufacturing defects or hardware failure, such as misuse, negligence, or service by an unauthorized representative. Contact NVIDIA Support to ask about your card and applicable terms. NVIDIA also directs owners of system-integrated cards to the system manufacturer for warranty service. ASUS, MSI, GIGABYTE, and other partner cards
Use the card maker’s regional support and warranty process. ASUS’s CID guidance says authorized service centers may offer CID part replacement for a charge and gives examples of damage that may affect warranty service; it does not determine whether a particular loose piece is covered. MSI provides graphics-card warranty checks and online RMA or service routes. MSI Support GIGABYTE’s U.S. support page provides repair requests, repair tracking, warranty inquiries, and e-support. GIGABYTE Support Check the support options and warranty terms for your region.

Why glue and improvised fixes are poor first steps
Don’t apply glue, tape, or thermal paste to reattach a piece. The cited manufacturer guidance does not authorize adhesive repair or provide a model-specific method for reattaching a loose shroud or heatsink part. Adhesive can complicate inspection or service, and it cannot establish whether the part was structural or whether the cooler is still properly assembled. Ask the card maker or a qualified repairer to identify the part before attempting any repair.
A support bracket is not a repair for a detached piece. ASUS describes card holders as support against sagging or bending caused by a graphics card’s weight, including in examples involving RTX 4090 cards. A holder may address sag if it is independently present, but it does not reattach a shroud or heatsink component. ASUS graphics-card holder guidance
Repair options if warranty coverage has ended
Have a qualified GPU repairer inspect the card and identify the loose part before approving work. A replacement cooler may be an option if the cooler assembly itself needs replacement, but compatibility must be confirmed for the exact card model. NVIDIA notes that compatible third-party VGA coolers exist in general; that does not mean one cooler fits every RTX 4090 or that a complete cooler replaces a standalone shroud part. NVIDIA Support: Graphics Card Fan Replacement
Do not buy a cooler or attempt cooler removal until a repairer or the manufacturer has confirmed what failed and which part fits. NVIDIA cautions that heatsink removal can damage the GPU if excessive force is used.
