If an online store shows a different price at checkout, pause before paying. Check whether the item, seller, discount conditions, delivery details, tax, or shipping changed; save evidence of both prices; then ask the seller to explain or honor the earlier offer. Whether the store must do so depends on where you live and the details of the offer—an earlier browsing price is not automatically a guaranteed price.
What to do before you pay
- Pause at checkout. Do not submit the order until you understand the revised amount and decide whether you accept it.
- Save evidence of both amounts. Capture the product page, cart, and checkout. Include the item or model, seller, date and time, delivery destination, selected size or other variant, quantity, applied code or promotion, and final total. Keep any seller messages and the order confirmation if you have already paid.
- Compare the offer details. Check whether the earlier price required a coupon, membership, minimum quantity, particular delivery method, or limited-time promotion. Confirm that the same seller and product variant remain selected. Separate any increase in item price from tax, shipping, handling, or add-ons.
- Ask the seller for an explanation or adjustment. Send the evidence and ask whether it will honor the earlier displayed offer or explain the difference. Check its published price-match, pricing-error, cancellation, and return policies. The FTC advises consumers to check a seller’s price-matching policy and contact the seller to request a match; that advice does not guarantee one. FTC: Discounts and Coupons.
- If the issue remains unresolved, use the seller’s complaint process. Keep your records and contact the consumer-protection agency or advice service for your location. The FTC’s advice to flag a checkout error promptly and ask about an adjustment comes from a report about in-store scanner errors, so it is practical analogy—not an online legal rule. Why the price may have changed
A mismatch does not by itself show what happened. Common possibilities include a promotion ending, a discount condition not being met, a different size or variant being selected, a marketplace switching sellers, a change in delivery location or method, taxes or shipping being added, or the retailer changing its price. Compare the details before concluding that the item’s base price changed.
Prices can change dynamically, but that does not mean every checkout mismatch is acceptable or that a prior browsing price is always locked in. The FTC says dynamic pricing may be used when pricing information is not misleading. Its cited FAQ concerns live-event tickets and short-term lodging, not all online retail transactions, and should not be treated as a universal retail rule. Google Merchant Center instructs participating merchants to keep product prices consistent through checkout. That is a platform requirement for merchants; it is not itself a consumer-law remedy or proof that a shopper automatically gets the earlier price. Google Merchant Center: Price consistency.

Does the store have to honor the earlier price?
There is no single answer for every shopper. The applicable law depends on your location, what the seller represented, the transaction, and the circumstances of the mismatch. A price changing is not, on its own, proof of a legal violation.
United States
Do not assume that every U.S. online store must honor any price shown while browsing. The FTC FAQ cited above discusses upfront total-price and final-payment disclosures for covered live-event tickets and short-term lodging; it also says dynamic pricing may be used if it is not misleading. Whether a particular retail offer is deceptive, and what remedy may be available, depends on the exact representation and applicable federal and state law.

United Kingdom
UK government guidance says consumer law does not generally prohibit dynamic pricing. It also warns that a mismatch between an invitation-to-purchase price and the amount actually payable may infringe the law. Its example includes a price changing after an item is placed in the basket and the shopper clicks through to checkout. This is UK guidance, not a rule for shoppers elsewhere. Other locations
Your country or state determines which consumer rules and complaint routes apply. Without knowing your location, it is not possible to identify the governing law or the relevant agency; do not rely on U.S. or UK guidance as if it decided your rights elsewhere.

Could personalized pricing explain the difference?
It is possible for personal data, including location or browsing behavior, to be used in individualized pricing, according to initial findings in an FTC staff study published in 2025. That market-study finding does not establish why a particular shopper saw a particular checkout price. FTC staff report on personalized pricing.
In an August 2026 release, the FTC described a proposed enforcement policy statement and quoted Chairman Andrew Ferguson: “When consumers see a listed price, they expect it to be same price that everyone else sees, not the retailer’s estimate of how much they are willing to pay based on their personal data.” The release said the FTC does not have authority to ban personalized pricing in all circumstances, while warning that undisclosed use of personal data to set prices may violate laws the agency enforces. The comment period described in the release ended September 18, 2026. - What does the seller promise? Review its stated adjustment, price-match, cancellation, return, and pricing-error policies, then use the complaint route it provides.
