First identify whether the problem is an update that is not offered, a failed download, an error while preparing or verifying, or an installation that only appears stuck. The right fix depends on whether you are updating an iPhone or iPad wirelessly, using a computer, or installing macOS. Check compatibility, internet access, available storage and power before retrying; then follow the device-specific steps below.
Identify the device and the stage where the update fails
Record the exact alert or error code, and note whether the update was never offered, would not download, failed while verifying or preparing, or stopped during installation. Apple describes updating as a sequence of detecting, downloading, preparing and installing, so the stage helps narrow down the likely fix. Apple’s overview of the software update process explains those stages.
- iPhone or iPad: Check that your particular model supports the iOS or iPadOS release you want. Not every device can install every major release.
- Mac: Software Update offers releases compatible with that Mac model. A message that the Mac is up to date can mean no compatible update is currently available.
If you see “Unable to Check for Update” or “Unable to Download,” note the wording. If you see a Mac error about downloading, preparing or installing, use the Mac-specific steps below rather than applying phone troubleshooting to it.

For iPhone and iPad
- Connect to Wi-Fi and power. Avoid starting other downloads at the same time; download duration depends on the update size and your internet speed.
- Open Settings > General > [device] Storage to check available space. You can remove content yourself, or, if prompted, allow the system to temporarily remove apps and reinstall them after updating.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN or proxy if one is active; either can interfere with reaching Apple’s update servers.

For Mac
- Confirm that the internet connection is stable. The installer may need to download macOS as well as firmware or other information for that Mac model.
- If the installer specifically reports insufficient space, free storage and try again.
- Back up the Mac before installing where possible.

If an iPhone or iPad update will not download
- Retry once on the same Wi-Fi network. If the same server-check or download alert returns, try another network.
- Delete the stored update package: open Settings > General > [device] Storage, find the update, tap it, then tap Delete Update.
- Download a fresh copy: go to Settings > General > Software Update and start the update again.
Apple notes that some updates are not available wirelessly. If the update is still unsuccessful, use a computer as described next. The delete-and-download-again procedure is Apple’s recommended retry for a failed iPhone or iPad update. See Apple’s full iPhone and iPad update guidance.

Update an iPhone or iPad with a computer
A computer is the documented alternative when wireless updating fails. Back up the device first. Use Finder on a Mac running macOS Catalina or later; use iTunes on macOS Mojave or earlier; on Windows, follow Apple’s error guidance for the Apple Devices app or iTunes.

- Connect the iPhone or iPad directly to a USB port on the computer, not through a keyboard or USB hub.
- Unlock the device and tap Trust if prompted.
- In Finder, select the device, open General, choose Check for Update, then select Download and Update.
Apple provides the Finder procedure at Update your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with the Finder. If the computer reports an error, follow the matching error-code guidance rather than guessing at its cause.

If a computer update reports an error
Restart the computer and device, then retry. If the error continues, work through the connection and software checks that fit the message:
- Try a different USB port, computer or network.
- If the error points to USB connectivity, try another cable; Apple recommends an Apple-certified cable for some update or restore errors involving USB.
- Check whether third-party security software is blocking the connection or update.
- Look up the exact error in Apple’s update and restore error guidance or iOS update and restore errors.
Error codes do not all mean the same thing. Depending on the specific code, Apple may point to server connectivity, security software, the USB connection, a locked device, outdated host software or possible hardware trouble. Use the explanation for your exact code.

If a Mac cannot download or install macOS
Start with stable internet and sufficient storage. If the alert says the installer is damaged or cannot be verified, Apple’s guidance is to repair the startup disk with Disk Utility from macOS Recovery, delete the previously downloaded installer and download a fresh one from Apple.
- Try macOS Recovery if another app or process may be interfering with installation.
- Try Safe Mode if the failed installation was started through Software Update or the App Store and you suspect another process is involved.
- Reserve firmware revival or restoration for persistent problems on Apple silicon or T2 Macs; it is not a routine first troubleshooting step.
Follow Apple’s current, model-appropriate instructions at If an error occurred while updating or installing macOS. Contact Apple Support if the installation still fails. Do not erase the Mac as an early troubleshooting step.

If the installation progress bar looks stuck
iPhone or iPad
An Apple-logo progress bar can move very slowly, look static for a while or complete and start again. Keep the device connected to power and give the installation time; a pause alone is not a reason to interrupt it. If it never completes or the device becomes unresponsive, follow Apple’s force-restart guidance for an Apple-logo progress bar. If the Apple-logo progress state remains after that, Apple says service may be needed.
Mac
Several restarts or a blank screen can occur during installation. Let the process continue; do not put the Mac to sleep or close a laptop’s lid while the installer is running.
