Check the order’s status in the retailer’s official app or website, then act through the channel responsible for the transaction. An in-progress checkout may still be cancelable; an accepted, shipped, or delivered order usually calls for the seller’s cancellation or return process. Contact your card issuer promptly only if the charge appears unauthorized or otherwise qualifies as a billing error. The rules below on card disputes and shipping apply to U.S. consumers; other countries have different protections.
First, identify what happened and who charged you
“The AI placed an order” can describe different situations: a checkout that has not finished, a retailer order that was accepted, or a charge for the AI service itself. The remedy depends on which one occurred. Open the retailer or payment provider directly rather than following a link in an unexpected email or text.
- Checkout still in progress: Look for a cancellation control in the retailer’s checkout or order page and use it promptly if available.
- Retail order accepted: Contact the seller through its official site or app and ask whether it can stop fulfillment. If it has shipped or arrived, check the return policy.
- AI-service charge: Use the billing or refund route for the service that charged you. This is separate from canceling a retail order.
- Potential billing error: If the charge was unauthorized, the amount is wrong, or goods were not delivered as agreed, contact the payment issuer promptly and follow its dispute instructions.
Keep the order number, amount, date, current status, confirmations, and messages. Save the relevant AI conversation or activity history if it is available; that can help explain what happened, though the FTC’s records advice specifically names order confirmations, receipts, tracking information, and communications.

If checkout has not completed
Use the retailer’s official checkout or account page to see whether the session can be canceled. OpenAI’s Agentic Checkout specification describes a cancellation endpoint for eligible checkout sessions: sessions that are neither completed nor canceled should be cancelable under that protocol, while completed or already canceled sessions cannot be canceled through that endpoint. This is technical documentation for that checkout protocol, not a guarantee that every AI assistant or retailer provides the same control. OpenAI Agentic Checkout specification.

If the retailer accepted the order
- Open the retailer’s known website or app and inspect the order status.
- If a cancellation option appears, submit the request and save its confirmation.
- If there is no option, contact the seller using contact information on its official site. Provide the order number, explain what was not intended, and ask whether fulfillment can be stopped.
- For a marketplace purchase, contact the seller first and then use the marketplace’s own help or escalation process if needed. Keep the messages and note any stated deadlines.
A completed order is not automatically refundable just because an assistant initiated it. The seller’s policy, item type, transaction facts, and local law can affect what options are available.
If it has shipped or arrived
Check the seller’s return policy and promptly request a return or refund if the item qualifies. Marketplace policies and time limits vary, so check both the seller’s terms and the marketplace’s process. The FTC recommends contacting the seller about an online order problem and keeping records; if that does not resolve a marketplace issue, contact the marketplace. When should I dispute the charge?
Use the issuer’s dispute process when there is a qualifying payment problem, not simply as a substitute for asking the retailer to cancel an unwanted but accepted order. In U.S. FTC guidance, credit-card billing errors include unauthorized charges, the wrong amount, charges for items not accepted, and items not delivered as agreed. The relevant facts matter: an AI’s involvement by itself does not establish that a transaction was unauthorized.
U.S. credit-card billing errors
The FTC says a written dispute generally must be sent within 60 days after the first statement containing the error is sent to preserve full protections under the Fair Credit Billing Act. Contact the issuer promptly and follow its current instructions. The issuer generally must acknowledge the dispute in writing within 30 days unless it resolves it first, and resolve it within two billing cycles, no more than 90 days. During the investigation, the disputed amount and related charges need not be paid, but the undisputed balance remains due. FTC guidance on billing errors and unordered products.

Debit cards and other payment methods
Debit-card protections differ from credit-card protections. The FTC notes that a consumer may not be able to obtain a refund under the same protections for a non-delivered or wrong item. Notify your bank or issuer as soon as you discover the problem and follow up in writing. If you used another payment method, check that provider’s dispute process and deadlines.
What if the seller says delivery is delayed or never happens?
For most U.S. mail, internet, and telephone orders, the FTC’s shipping rule requires a seller to ship within the promised time, or within 30 days if no shipping time was stated. If the seller cannot meet the deadline, it must notify you and offer the choice to agree to the delay or cancel for a full refund. If the seller does not ship, the refund must be full rather than store credit. This rule addresses delayed or unshipped orders; it is not a blanket right to cancel every completed purchase because an AI placed it. See the FTC explanation of delayed orders and billing problems.

What if the charge is for the AI assistant’s subscription?
Do not handle a subscription renewal as though it were a retailer order. Identify which company or app store billed you, then use that billing channel’s cancellation and refund process. Canceling a subscription ordinarily stops future renewals; it does not by itself establish that a past charge qualifies for a refund.
For ChatGPT specifically, OpenAI says web subscribers can request a refund through Help Center chat while logged in to the account associated with the charge. Apple-billed subscriptions must be canceled and refund requests made through Apple; for Google Play purchases, OpenAI directs users to request a refund through its Help Center. OpenAI describes its payments as generally non-refundable subject to applicable rights and stated exceptions, and says validated unauthorized charges and verified billing errors may be reviewed. Regional terms differ, including provisions identified for residents of the EU, UK, Turkey, and Korea. These instructions apply to ChatGPT, not other AI services. What records should I keep, and where can I report a scam?
- Save the order confirmation, receipt, payment statement, tracking details, and seller or marketplace communications.
- Record the order number, date, amount, and status, and preserve relevant AI activity history when available.
- Keep copies of cancellation or refund requests and any replies, including the date and channel used.
- If you suspect fraud rather than an ordinary mistake, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For a marketplace problem, the FTC also advises reporting a dishonest business to the marketplace and your state attorney general.
The FTC reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam to the agency in 2022. That figure concerns shopping scams generally, not orders placed by AI assistants. FTC advice for online shopping problems.
