First check the transaction on an explorer for the network it actually used. Then decide whether it is still pending, failed, or confirmed: those states have different next steps, and a confirmed on-chain transfer generally cannot be reversed. Save the transaction hash (TxID), token, amount, sending and receiving addresses, network, status, and timestamps before contacting a wallet, exchange, bridge, or recipient.
How to check what happened to the transfer
- Find the transaction record. Open the sending wallet, exchange, or bridge and locate the transfer. Record its transaction hash or withdrawal TxID, token, amount, sending and receiving addresses, network, displayed status, and relevant timestamps.
- Open the transaction on an explorer for that exact network. Check whether it is pending, failed, or confirmed. A wallet’s pending label, a bridge’s delayed status, and a successful on-chain transaction are not interchangeable.
- Identify who controls the destination. Work out whether it is another wallet you control, a person you know, or an exchange or service. Also check whether the receiving wallet or platform supports that exact token on the network used.
- Use the branch below that matches the chain result and destination. Do not send a second transfer until you have checked the first transaction and confirmed the receiving details.
What to do when a transfer is pending
Self-custody wallet transaction
If the transaction has not been confirmed, check the wallet’s official instructions for that network. Some wallets offer a speed-up or cancellation attempt while a transaction remains pending. MetaMask, for example, describes a speed-up as resubmitting the transaction with a higher fee; its cancellation option can only be attempted while the transaction is still pending. These controls are wallet- and network-dependent, can cost more, and are not a way to undo a confirmed transfer. See MetaMask’s instructions for speeding up or canceling a pending transaction; its current help describes extension version 13.30+ behavior for certain networks and says the interface change does not cover Mobile or Portfolio.
Exchange-originated transfer
Use the exchange’s own transaction status and official support flow. Pending status can reflect network delays or the need for more confirmations. Coinbase’s troubleshooting and pending-transaction guidance applies to Coinbase product flows, not every exchange. Do not assume an exchange withdrawal can be canceled once it has been broadcast; check the provider’s status and instructions at Coinbase Send and receive troubleshooting and Coinbase Pending crypto transactions.

What to do when a transfer failed
A failed transfer is not the same as a delayed one. For a failed USDC Bridge transfer, Circle says no USDC moved to the destination network and the funds remain in the source wallet. Follow the bridge’s displayed error guidance, check the source wallet balance and network, and contact official support if the displayed result does not match the balance. Confirm the first transaction’s actual result and recheck the destination details before trying again. Circle’s guidance is specific to USDC Bridge: My transfer failed.

What to do if a confirmed transfer went to the wrong address
A completed on-chain transaction is generally final. Ethereum.org says Ethereum transactions are irreversible, and Circle says it cannot reverse or retrieve a completed USDC Bridge transfer sent to the wrong address or network. Circle’s Help Center states: “Blockchain transactions can’t be reversed.” Read Ethereum.org’s frequently asked questions, Circle’s USDC wrong-address or network guidance, and Circle’s explanation of why transfers are irreversible.
- If you know the recipient: Ask them to return the funds in a separate transaction. That requires their cooperation; there is no guaranteed reversal.
- If the address belongs to an exchange or service: Contact that provider through its official support channel and provide the TxID and transfer details. The provider can assess the case, but recovery is not assured.
- If the address is unknown: Do not trust anyone who promises they can retrieve the funds in exchange for access or an upfront payment.
What to do if you used the wrong network
Check the transaction record to establish which network actually processed the transfer. For USDC, Circle notes that a completed transfer may simply need to be viewed by switching the receiving wallet to the network used, provided that wallet supports USDC there. An address that looks the same across EVM-compatible networks does not mean an exchange will automatically credit a deposit sent on the wrong network.

If the destination belongs to an exchange or service, contact its support with the TxID, token, amount, and network. Recovery depends on the provider, asset, network, and account. OKX cautions that its ability to help with an irreversible on-chain withdrawal is limited and that recovery commonly depends on communication with the recipient or platform; see OKX’s withdrawal-error guidance.

What to do if you dispute or did not authorize the transfer
Distinguish a transfer you authorized but sent incorrectly from activity you did not authorize. If you suspect that an account or wallet was compromised, promptly contact the provider through a verified official channel, secure any remaining account access, and preserve transaction records and notices.

Circle’s USDC terms tell Circle Mint users who believe a transaction was unauthorized or incorrectly carried out to notify Circle as soon as possible. That is guidance for Circle Mint users, not a general chargeback or reversal right for stablecoin transfers. Options depend on the provider, account, jurisdiction, and facts; the reviewed provider guidance does not establish a universal dispute process or guaranteed remedy. See Circle’s USDC Terms.

- Keep the transaction hash or withdrawal TxID, the explorer link for the exact network, and the transfer details together.
- For an exchange deposit, verify that the platform supports the exact token and network, then contact its official support with the transaction details.
- Navigate to a provider’s official website or app yourself rather than trusting unsolicited recovery messages.
- Never share a seed phrase or private key. Ethereum.org warns that recovery scams commonly ask for seed phrases and that a legitimate service will not ask for one.
- Do not pay a purported recovery agent or make another transfer until you have verified the original transaction’s state and destination.
