Start with a restart, check for follow-up software and app updates, then use Battery usage, Device care and Samsung diagnostics to narrow down what is happening. If a downloaded app appears responsible, adjust or remove it; if the problem persists in Safe mode, contact Samsung for a service assessment. Back up your data before considering a factory reset.
Does a One UI update cause slow performance or battery drain?
Not necessarily. Samsung lists background apps, low available memory, outdated software and temporary system errors among possible causes of a Galaxy phone appearing slow. Faster battery drain can also be associated with background activity or a weak network signal. A symptom that begins after an update does not, by itself, prove the update caused a fault or that the battery is damaged. Samsung’s troubleshooting pages note that menu names and screens can vary by model, software and app version. Samsung’s slow-device guidance and battery guidance offer checks to help isolate the cause.

Samsung says battery use can be temporarily higher during the first few days of first using a phone, while apps and services optimize. That is guidance about initial phone use, not a guaranteed timeline for a Galaxy device after a One UI update. Samsung’s support information does not establish a universal number of hours or days for post-update symptoms to resolve.
What to do first
1. Restart and check for a follow-up update
- Open the phone’s power menu and tap Restart. If the phone is frozen, Samsung’s slow-device instructions say to hold the Side key and Volume down together for more than seven seconds.
- After the phone starts, open Settings > Software update. Samsung’s US instructions use Download and install on One UI 8.0 or earlier, and Check for updates on One UI 8.5 or later. Follow the option shown on your device.
- Check for app updates in the official store you use. Update availability and the timing of software rollouts can depend on the Galaxy model, carrier and region.
A restart can close running apps and refresh the system. It is a useful first check, not proof that an update-related problem has been fixed. Samsung’s slow or unresponsive device instructions describe the restart and update steps.

2. Check memory and storage
Close apps you are not using. If the option is available, open Settings > Device care > Memory > Clean now. Check storage separately in Device care: available memory and available storage are different things. Samsung identifies background apps and low available memory as possible contributors to slow performance, but cleaning memory is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed fix. If the phone remains slow, continue troubleshooting rather than repeatedly cleaning memory. Samsung’s slow-device guidance covers these checks.
Find what is draining the battery
Open Settings > Battery and inspect the usage graph or app details. Consider the period shown and what you were doing: an app near the top may simply be one you used heavily. If an app you rarely use shows substantial activity, investigate its background use.
- Sleep or deep sleep: Put infrequently used apps to sleep if your device offers the setting. Deep sleeping apps do not run in the background and work only when opened manually, so notifications or other background activity may be affected.
- Power saving mode: Try it if you need to reduce battery consumption. It may limit background activity or other functions.
- Remove a suspect app: If a downloaded app appears to account for unusual drain, uninstall it if appropriate and observe whether battery behavior changes.
- Consider signal strength: Samsung lists weak network signal as another possible reason for faster drain. Compare usage under ordinary coverage before attributing the change to the update.
Samsung’s battery instructions recommend checking usage, sleeping infrequently used apps and using Power saving mode. The exact settings can vary by phone and software. Samsung UK’s battery guide, updated 28 April 2026, describes these options.

Samsung Members can test battery status and, depending on the device, functions such as charging, mobile network, Wi-Fi and sensors. Open Samsung Members and look for Phone diagnostics in the Discover or Support tab. On supported phones, another route is Settings > Device care > Diagnostics > Phone diagnostics.
Available tests and menus vary by device. Samsung says Device care diagnostics are available on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or later; Samsung Members availability and test coverage can also differ. If a test reports a problem, follow its guidance or contact Samsung support. See Samsung’s diagnostics instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use Safe mode to check downloaded apps
Safe mode temporarily disables downloaded apps and runs core apps, helping you determine whether an installed app may be involved. If the slowdown or unusual drain stops in Safe mode, remove recently downloaded apps one at a time and observe the phone between removals. If symptoms continue, downloaded apps are less likely to be the explanation.
Samsung says an issue that persists in Safe mode is likely hardware-related and recommends a service-center inspection or scheduling a repair. The precise Safe mode startup steps can differ by device; check Samsung’s instructions for your model rather than assuming one key sequence applies to every Galaxy phone. Samsung’s Safe mode and repair guidance explains the diagnostic distinction.
When to consider a reset or service
If basic checks, diagnostics and Safe mode do not resolve the symptoms, contact Samsung support or arrange a service assessment. A One UI update symptom alone is not a battery-health diagnosis: Samsung describes capacity loss as gradual with repeated charging and discharging, and provides a battery-status diagnostic. A reset should not be the first step.
If you decide to factory reset, first back up information you need. Samsung warns that personal information may not be recoverable after a reset. Consult current instructions for your exact device before proceeding. Samsung’s troubleshooting page includes the backup caution.
Quick Recap
Which check should you use?
| Check | What it can help identify | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Battery usage graph | Whether particular apps account for a large share of battery use | Interpret app use alongside the graph’s time period and your activity. |
| Samsung Members or Device care diagnostics | Battery status and other device functions | Tests vary by phone, software and availability; a result may require Samsung support. |
| Safe mode | Whether a downloaded app may be involved | Downloaded apps are disabled temporarily, so their normal behavior and notifications are unavailable during the check. |
| Samsung service assessment | Possible hardware issues when symptoms persist in Safe mode | Requires a service assessment. |
