If a PS5 setting or feature looks different after an update, first check the installed system software version and identify exactly what changed. Then look for the setting in its current menu and adjust it directly if it is available. A change noticed after an update does not, by itself, prove the update reset or removed anything.
Avoid resetting or reinstalling the console as a first step. Sony’s Restore Default Settings option can reset settings without deleting user or game data, while the separate Reset PS5 options can delete data.
Identify what changed and check your PS5 version
Pin down whether the issue is a changed setting value, a menu you can no longer find, a missing feature, a failed update, or abnormal system behavior. Also check whether the console is using beta software. These are different problems, and the right next step depends on which one you have.
- On the PS5, go to Settings > System > System Software > Console Information.
- Read the installed system software version shown on that screen.
- Compare that version with Sony’s system software release information before attributing a change to a particular update. The available support guidance does not identify which update you installed or what its release notes say.
The support instructions cited here are from Sony’s US PlayStation Support pages. Menu labels and availability can vary by region or software version.

Try the individual setting before resetting settings
Open the menu relevant to the setting and change it directly if it is still available. This is the lowest-impact approach for a single preference. Without the specific setting and installed version, there is no basis to say that a particular control moved, was reset, or was removed.
When Restore Default Settings makes sense
If the problem concerns visual or audio defaults, or you deliberately want to restore a broader set of settings, Sony provides Settings > System > System Software > Reset Options > Restore Default Settings. Before confirming, read the on-screen list of settings that will be affected: the operation can change settings beyond the one you noticed. Sony says, “Restoring default settings doesn’t erase any user or game data, but other settings are affected.” See Sony’s Restore Default Settings instructions.

Choose a recovery option that matches the symptom
Safe Mode offers several actions with different purposes. Sony lists Clear System Software Cache for system feature issues or performance drops. Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new database of system content; Sony says it may help with system feature issues or a deleted game icon that still appears on Home. Neither option is described as a guaranteed fix for one changed setting.

Sony’s Safe Mode guide describes these options. Do not choose Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) to address an ordinary changed toggle or menu: they have substantially broader consequences.
If the system software update failed
Use Sony’s update troubleshooting only if the update did not complete or the console reports an update error. For a failed download, Sony instructs users to open Downloads/Uploads, highlight the system software update, choose View Error Info, then select Try Again.

If repeated attempts fail, Sony’s manual update instructions describe using a computer and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Sony’s undated US support page, accessed in 2026, specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. Follow Sony’s instructions and use only its official update file; this procedure is not a requirement for routine settings changes.
Sony also provides a separate system-software reinstallation procedure. It states, “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” Treat that as a last resort, and back up data before proceeding. The same support page lists approximately 1.2 GB for the reinstallation file; that is distinct from the approximately 1.1 GB requirement for the update file.

If your PS5 is using beta software
Beta participants can use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Stop Using Beta Version to return to the latest official system software. Sony documents this option for beta users; it does not apply to consoles that are not using beta software. See Sony’s PS5 system software beta instructions.
When to contact PlayStation support
If an abnormal system fault persists after suitable software troubleshooting, Sony’s PS5 support page links to PlayStation Repairs diagnostics. A changed preference or feature alone does not establish that the console needs repair.
