If a One UI update will not download or install, first check whether it has reached your exact Galaxy model and carrier. Then address the specific obstacle—connection, storage, or an interrupted download—and try Samsung Smart Switch on a computer if the phone’s over-the-air download keeps failing. Keep the phone charged and do not interrupt installation.
Check whether the update is available for your Galaxy phone
A missing update is not necessarily a failed download. Samsung releases updates in stages, and availability can depend on the model, carrier, region, and software version. Check your exact model and carrier’s release information, then check again later if the update has not reached your device yet. Samsung’s software update guidance and Galaxy update troubleshooting explain that rollout timing and carrier requirements can vary.
On the phone, open Settings and look for Software update or System updates; the wording and location vary. Choose the available option to check for updates or download and install one. If no update appears, some carriers require Wi-Fi, and a phone unlocked by its original carrier may need that carrier’s SIM to receive updates. Check with the carrier if you are unsure which rule applies.

Fix a stalled or incomplete download
Use a stable connection
Connect to a reliable network and use Wi-Fi if your carrier requires it. If the download stopped before completing, check the notification shade for the update notification and use its resume option, as described in Samsung’s troubleshooting instructions.

Free the storage the phone requests
If the update reports insufficient storage, remove or move files and apps until the phone reports enough space. Use the amount shown in the error or update screen; there is no single free-space target established for every Galaxy model and update.
Try Smart Switch on a computer
If the phone’s over-the-air download continues to fail, Samsung Smart Switch provides a computer-based alternative. It only helps if an update is offered for your particular device and carrier; it does not bypass rollout eligibility.

- Install or open Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer with its included USB cable. If the computer has no compatible port, you may need a USB adapter.
- If Smart Switch detects an available update, select Update and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Keep the phone connected and do not use it until the update completes and the phone restarts.
Samsung specifically warns: “Do not disconnect the USB cable or use your device until the update is complete.” See Samsung’s Smart Switch update instructions.

During installation, the phone cannot be used normally, and files may be inaccessible. Keep it comfortably charged and follow the instructions for your region and device. Samsung Philippines recommends at least 20% battery in its Galaxy software update guidance; related Samsung US guidance says to charge to at least 50% before installing in its update instructions. These are region-specific recommendations, not a universal threshold.

If the phone will not boot after an update
Stop repeating update attempts if the phone cannot boot normally. Samsung says service may be needed to reflash a device after a failed update. The One UI 7 troubleshooting page directs affected users to a service center or repair appointment; its guidance is specific to One UI 7, so check current instructions for your model and release.
Back up important data before performing a factory reset. If the phone cannot start or you cannot access your data, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center for advice before resetting it.
