If a station cannot sell your fuel, check a current local update or call another forecourt before setting off. Drive to an alternative only if you have enough fuel to reach it; otherwise, stop somewhere safe and arrange another way to travel or suitable roadside help. One station’s stockout does not, by itself, mean national rationing has begun.
What should I do if the petrol station has run out?
- Confirm another option before detouring. Check a reliable, up-to-date local availability notice or call another station to ask whether it has your fuel grade. Forecourt stock can change, so treat an old listing or an unconfirmed report as uncertain.
- Compare the confirmed station with your remaining range. If your vehicle has enough fuel to get there safely, go directly to that station. Do not drive around hoping to find fuel when you cannot confirm a destination.
- If you cannot safely reach fuel, stop somewhere safe. Avoid blocking pumps, entrances or traffic while you decide. Arrange another travel option or contact appropriate roadside assistance if the vehicle cannot reach fuel safely.
- Reconsider the trip. For a non-essential journey, postpone it or use public transport, walking, cycling or a lift where practical. Can I drive to another petrol station if mine is out of fuel?
Yes, if you have enough fuel to reach a confirmed alternative station. Check that it sells the grade your vehicle needs and, if possible, call before setting out. If the remaining fuel is not enough for the journey, do not attempt a speculative drive: pull over somewhere safe and arrange help or another way to travel.
Does one station running out mean fuel is being rationed?
No. A local shortage of petrol or diesel is not evidence by itself that national emergency controls are active. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s National Emergency Plan for Fuel (NEP-F) describes options for a major disruption in Great Britain. The government says activation would be considered only if significant and widespread disruption to oil supply were possible, with the response depending on the circumstances and the least invasive measure preferred first. What the plan could involve in a severe disruption
The plan describes contingency measures, not current instructions. Options to help maintain supply include coordinating with industry, using reserve fuel tankers and drivers, temporarily relaxing drivers’ hours for specific operations, and releasing emergency oil stocks during a significant global supply disruption. In a severe national shortage, possible controls could include giving emergency and critical-service vehicles priority at designated stations, prioritising bulk deliveries to critical services, prioritising road diesel for commercial vehicles supporting key supply chains, or limiting public purchases per visit or sale hours.

The latest dated national supply statement identified here was a UK Parliament answer on 20 April 2026. Responding for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Martin McCluskey said: “We are not currently at, nor approaching, the threshold for their use, and fuel continues to be available through normal supply routes.” That statement describes the national position on that date; it is not a live check of stock at any particular forecourt. Should I keep petrol in a can in case stations run out?
Do not treat a fuel can as a routine backup. The Health and Safety Executive warns that petrol is highly flammable and says, “Don’t store petrol unless you have to.” If you must fill a portable petrol container at a station, place it on the ground and follow the station’s safety instructions. This HSE advice concerns petrol; do not assume it sets the same storage rules for diesel. Read the HSE guidance on storing and using petrol.

How should I respond if shortages affect several stations?
Keep journeys to essential travel and check availability before making a trip for fuel. Consider public transport, walking, cycling, car sharing or postponing travel where practical. During the September 2021 disruption, the government’s risk document attributed station shortages to consumer panic buying rather than supply-chain issues; that historical account does not establish the cause of a current or future stockout.
