Report the specific post to the platform where it appears, then follow the steps that fit the harm: intimate imagery, impersonation or fraud, or blackmail. If the deepfake is an intimate image, U.S. rules for covered platforms require a removal-request process and removal of the image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. That rule does not cover every kind of deepfake or every country.
What should I do first if someone made a deepfake of me?
- Report the specific post. Use the reporting option on the post or image if you have an account. If you do not, use the platform’s help or support page. Reporting routes vary by platform and account status. Keep the platform name, post location, and removal-request details so you can follow up on the same report. The FTC explains the first steps in its guidance on intimate images shared without consent.
- Choose the right route for the content. If it is an intimate image, use the platform’s intimate-image reporting route and consider the age-specific hash services below. If the deepfake is being used to impersonate you, steal information, or solicit money, take fraud and account-security steps as well.
How do I get a fake nude or other intimate deepfake taken down?
The FTC treats nonconsensual intimate imagery as image-based abuse whether it is real, digitally altered, or AI-generated. Its guidance puts removal in the platform’s hands: “Only platforms can take down intimate photos and videos shared without your consent.” The quote is from the Federal Trade Commission’s Image-Based Abuse: What To Know and Do guidance, published May 2026.
Make a request under the U.S. Take It Down Act
For covered platforms and intimate images, the U.S. Take It Down Act requires platforms to provide a way to request removal and to remove the reported image and known identical copies within 48 hours of a valid request. This is not a general 48-hour deadline for nonsexual deepfakes, every type of platform, or services outside the law’s coverage. If a covered platform does not remove the content within that time, or has no working request process, report the platform at TakeItDown.ftc.gov. The FTC sets out the scope and steps in its September 2026 guidance and May 2026 image-based abuse guidance.
Use the hash service that matches your age when the image was made
Hash services create a digital fingerprint of an image to help participating companies identify matching copies. They do not upload the selected image to the service, and they cannot guarantee removal everywhere. Continue to report the posted item directly to the platform.

What if the deepfake is a fake voice, video, or profile used for a scam?
A nonsexual fake used to impersonate you or solicit money or personal information is a different problem from intimate-image abuse. A takedown request may address the post, but it will not reverse a payment, secure a compromised account, or fix identity misuse by itself.

- Verify suspicious requests independently. If someone using your likeness asks for money or sensitive information, contact the supposed person or organization using a number or method you find independently—not details in the suspicious message.
- Report fraud. The FTC’s guidance explains how to report a scam and impersonator scams.
- Respond to identity misuse. If your personal information was misused, use IdentityTheft.gov for the FTC’s recovery plan.
- Secure affected accounts. If credentials were exposed, change the compromised password and turn on two-factor authentication.
What if someone is threatening to send the deepfake unless I pay?
Blackmail is not your fault. For image-based blackmail, the FTC advises not to pay, send more images, or give the person access to financial accounts or devices. Cut off contact, block the person, and tell someone you trust. The FTC also advises reporting perpetrators to local criminal law enforcement and the FBI; if a minor is involved, it points to NCMEC’s CyberTipline. What if I live outside the United States?
The 48-hour requirement described above is a U.S. rule for covered platforms and intimate images. If you are elsewhere, report the post through the platform and check the laws and support services in your jurisdiction. StopNCII and NCMEC Take It Down have their own eligibility rules and participating-company limits; neither should be treated as a guarantee that every copy will disappear.
