A dating-app match with a coworker does not obligate you to message, date, explain yourself, or discuss it at work. You can leave the match alone, unmatch, or send a brief, low-pressure message if you are interested. If either person has authority over the other’s work, check your employer’s policy before taking things further.
Decide whether you want to engage
A match is only an invitation to decide what you want to do next. It is not evidence that you are dating, a workplace policy violation, or permission for either person to pursue the other at work.
- Not interested: You can leave the match unanswered or unmatch. You do not owe an explanation.
- Interested, with no work-related power imbalance: If you choose to respond, keep it neutral and low pressure. Let the other person decide whether to continue the conversation.
- Unsure: Take time before responding. You can make a decision later, or not at all.
If you message, keep the conversation on the app at first
Keeping early messages on the dating app gives you a little distance while you decide whether you are comfortable. Tinder’s safety guidance recommends taking time before moving a conversation off the app and cautions against sharing personal information too soon. Its reporting guidance also covers reporting inappropriate behavior and, where appropriate, unmatching or blocking; exact controls vary by app. Tinder safety guidance.
Do not treat a match as permission to bring the subject up repeatedly at work, find personal contact details, or use workplace systems to pursue someone. Keep work conversations professional unless you both clearly and freely choose otherwise.

Check for a power imbalance before pursuing a relationship
Take particular care if either person supervises, evaluates, schedules, assigns work to, or otherwise influences the other’s assignments, compensation, feedback, or advancement. Even if the interest seems mutual, the authority relationship can create pressure or a conflict of interest.
Before taking the interaction further, read your employer’s actual policy. If it is unclear, ask HR or another appropriate contact how to handle a potential conflict. Policies differ: Meta’s published workplace policy calls for disclosure to HR in certain management-chain relationships and situations where one person can influence the other’s projects or performance; it is an example of one employer’s rules, not a universal standard. Some public-sector rules are more restrictive. For example, a 2023 District of Columbia mayoral order prohibits certain relationships between supervisors and employees in their chain of command and describes procedures for resolving covered conflicts. That order applies to its stated jurisdiction and workforce, not to every employer. District of Columbia Mayor’s Order 2023-131.

If you do not want to discuss the app or pursue anything, say so briefly and clearly. For example: “I prefer to keep things professional at work; please don’t bring the app into work conversations.” This is a practical way to state a preference, not a legal formula.

If the other person respects the boundary, continue to interact professionally. If they keep contacting you, press you, or bring the matter into work in a way that affects you, make a factual record and consider using an appropriate workplace channel.

If pursuit continues after you say no, or you experience harassment, threats, or retaliation, save relevant messages and note dates, what happened, and any witnesses. You can report app behavior through the app’s reporting tools; for workplace conduct, consider HR, a manager outside the person’s reporting chain, or another designated reporting channel. If you feel in immediate danger, prioritize your safety and contact local emergency help.
For U.S. readers, the EEOC explains that sex-based harassment may violate Title VII when it is severe or pervasive enough to create a hostile work environment, or when it results in a tangible employment action. Its guidance also addresses an employer’s responsibility for coworker harassment when the employer knew or should have known and failed to take appropriate steps. Whether a specific situation meets the legal standard depends on its facts; this general guidance is not a determination about an individual case.
