First, identify the message on your Samsung phone: a network-unlock prompt, a SIM PIN or PUK request, and a “No SIM” error have different causes and require different fixes. For a true carrier lock, contact the carrier or retailer that originally supplied the phone; for a SIM-detection problem, check the card, tray, and phone settings instead.
Identify what the phone is asking for
The wording on screen is the quickest way to choose the right fix. A SIM that is detected but rejected is a different problem from a SIM the phone cannot see.

Request an unlock for a carrier-locked phone
- Find out who originally supplied the phone. Check the purchase paperwork, account records, or the person or retailer you bought it from. Samsung says it does not lock devices to a particular network itself; a network provider that supplied the device may have locked it.
- Contact that carrier or retailer. Ask it to check unlock eligibility for this phone’s IMEI and your specific account, country, and purchase or financing status. Requirements differ by carrier and location. For example, AT&T’s unlock request is subject to its eligibility requirements; its rules should not be assumed to apply to another carrier.
- Follow the carrier’s instructions and keep the confirmation. The carrier will tell you how to complete the unlock, which may involve an unlock code or other steps. Keep any case number and confirmation in case the request needs follow-up.
- If the other carrier’s SIM still fails, check compatibility and activation. After the original carrier confirms the unlock, ask the new carrier whether it supports the exact Samsung model and whether the SIM or service is activated. An unlock does not establish that every carrier supports every model.
Fees, eligibility, and whether unlocking is permitted depend on the provider’s terms. Samsung UK says owners should contact the original provider or retailer and notes that providers’ policies vary. Avoid assuming an unrelated third-party code seller is equivalent to the original carrier: the official guidance cited here supports requesting the unlock from the original provider or retailer, not any particular third-party service.
What the T-Mobile timing statement does—and does not—mean
T-Mobile’s Consumer Code says that within two business days after an unlock request, carriers will unlock eligible devices, start an OEM unlock request, explain why a device does not qualify, or explain why more time is reasonably needed. This is wording in T-Mobile’s code, not a universal deadline for every carrier or country.

Fix a Samsung phone that does not detect its SIM
Check the SIM status
On supported Samsung phones, open Settings → About phone → Status information → SIM card status and check whether a carrier name appears under Network. Menu names can vary by model and software version. Samsung’s U.S. SIM-detection troubleshooting guide describes this check.
Check activation, the card, and the tray
- Ask the carrier about SIM protection or activation. Some carriers offer a SIM-protection feature that may prevent activation in a new device. Ask the carrier for the SIM’s status and whether it is active for this phone.
- Restart and reseat the SIM. Turn the phone off, remove the tray, check that the SIM is correctly positioned, then fully reinsert the tray and restart. Do not force the card or tray, and keep the tray dry. Samsung says physical-SIM Galaxy phones use Nano-SIM cards.
- Inspect and clean the card gently. If the contacts look dirty, wipe them with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid touching the metal contacts with your hands or metal objects. If the SIM is visibly damaged, ask the carrier about a replacement.
- Test with another SIM, or test this SIM in another phone. Use an active SIM if available. If the issue follows the current card, contact its carrier to check activation or replacement. If a known-good active SIM also goes undetected in the Samsung phone, continue with diagnostics or service.
Run diagnostics or reset mobile-network settings
If a known-good SIM is not recognized, open Samsung Members and try Support → Get started → SIM diagnostics, where that option is available. If the issue may be caused by incorrect network settings, Samsung lists Settings → General management → Reset → Reset mobile network settings. Read the on-screen notice before confirming: this reset removes saved mobile-network configuration information and reconnects using defaults. If detection still fails, contact Samsung service.

Samsung India’s guidance, updated August 27, 2026, also lists temporary software problems, SIM damage, incorrect insertion, and carrier settings among possible SIM issues. Its SIM-detection troubleshooting page recommends checking SIM status, carrier SIM protection, and the card itself.
