If you passed HSC-I Pre-Engineering, check your college’s instructions for continuing to Part-II and plan around your eventual degree goal. If you failed a paper or received a compartment, use your result card and your own board’s current notice to confirm the repeat route, deadlines, and whether you can continue Part-II. Rules vary by board and exam session; passing or failing Part-I alone does not determine university admission.
First, confirm what your result says
Check the official result card and any notice from your board. Distinguish a failed subject from an absent paper, a withheld result, or an overall Part-I failure: the category affects what action you may need to take.
HSC-I here means Pakistan’s HSC/HSSC Part-I. Your examination board, province, exam session, and regular or private candidate status matter. Do not assume a rule published by one board applies to another.
If you passed HSC-I
Confirm the move to Part-II
Ask your college examination office what you need to do for HSC-II enrollment, subject registration, practicals, attendance, and fee deadlines. Follow the instructions for your board and session; there is no single promotion rule established here for every Pakistani board.

Choose a goal and check its requirements
If you are considering engineering, computing, architecture or planning, another degree, or employment and training, check the requirements of the specific program or route. Universities may differ in accepted subjects, entry tests, merit calculations, dates, and additional conditions.
For engineering in Pakistan, the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) states a minimum aggregate of 60% in HSSC Pre-Engineering with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. PEC’s 2023 amendment also allows the Physics, Mathematics, and Computer Studies/Computer Science combination for engineering programs, with Chemistry taken as a remedial first-semester course. Treat these as eligibility rules, not a promise of admission: check current PEC policy and each university’s current admissions information before choosing subjects or applying.

Get the board-specific recovery instructions
Contact your college examination office or board promptly, before a registration window can pass. Ask:
- Which examination session is available for the failed or missed paper?
- Can you continue Part-II coursework while preparing for the repeat, or must you repeat Part-I or follow another route?
- How do you register, what fee applies, and does regular or private candidate status change the process?
- Is scrutiny or rechecking available, and what is its deadline?
Keep copies of your result card, registration details, forms, and payment receipts. Scrutiny is a process to request a review, not a guarantee that marks will change.
Rank #2
Official repeat routes exist, but the details are board-specific. For example, the Federal Board (FBISE) has HSSC paper reappearance rules, including a timing condition in its result-cancellation instructions for rejoining a class. The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIE Karachi) publishes repeater and failure schedules as well as scrutiny notices. Neither board’s notices establish the rules for a student registered with another board; use your own board’s current notice.
Make a focused study plan
Once you know which paper you must repeat, use the official syllabus for your board, course year, and subject. Review the failed units, practise past papers aligned with that board and course, and ask a qualified teacher for help if useful. Tutoring is optional. FBISE, for example, maintains separate HSSC-I and HSSC-II syllabus resources, so check that revision material matches the right level rather than relying on a generic “FSc” label.

Pre-Engineering applicants
The PEC’s 60% HSSC aggregate minimum is an eligibility threshold, not a guarantee of a place. Applicants must also meet the university’s current subject, entry-test, merit, deadline, and other program requirements. Check whether the engineering program’s accreditation or recognition requirements are relevant to your plans.

A PEC letter dated July 11, 2024 describes a conditional route for HSSC Pre-Medical candidates: an eight-week condensed Mathematics program and a separate entry test. The 60% HSSC minimum still applies, and admission depends on merit and implementation by the institution. The letter permits eligible candidates who complete the program to fill up to 40% of the total allowed intake; that is a cap, not a promise that a university will reserve or fill those seats. This route is not a shortcut around completing HSC-I and HSC-II, and candidates should confirm current policy and university requirements when applying.
Quick Recap
Where to verify current instructions
- Your examination board: Check the result card and current examination notices for repeat registration, candidate category, scrutiny, dates, and fees.
- Your college: Confirm Part-II enrollment, subject registration, attendance, practicals, and any required paperwork.
- PEC and target universities: Check current engineering eligibility policy and each institution’s admissions information for subjects, tests, merit, accreditation or recognition, and deadlines.
- Study materials: Match books and practice papers to your board, course year, subject, and current syllabus.
