After a skateboard crash, first make sure the scene is safe, then check whether the person responds, is breathing normally, and has life-threatening bleeding. Call your local emergency number for an unresponsive person, abnormal breathing, severe bleeding, or another immediately dangerous condition. Do not move someone if you suspect a head, neck, or spinal injury.
What to do immediately after a skateboard crash
- Check for danger. Look for traffic, other moving skaters, broken glass, or any hazard that could injure you or the person. Do not put yourself at risk while helping.
- Check responsiveness and breathing. If the person does not respond, is not fully awake, is not breathing normally or is only gasping, or has life-threatening bleeding, call your local emergency number. Give first aid only within your training.
- Keep a potentially injured person still. If a head, neck, or spinal injury is possible, do not ask them to move. Keep them in the position found and monitor their breathing and responsiveness. The American Red Cross advises: “Do not ask the person to move if you suspect a head, neck or spinal injury.” (American Red Cross first aid steps)
- Leave the helmet on. Do not remove it unless CPR is needed.
- Consider the whole crash. Severe pain, multiple injuries, inability to move safely, or possible injury to the head, neck, spine, or pelvis calls for urgent help even if a scrape or other visible injury seems minor.
When a head injury needs emergency care
After a head impact, call your local emergency number for any serious warning sign. NHS guidance uses 999 in the UK; emergency numbers and care routes vary by location. Emergency signs include:
- The person was knocked out and has not woken, or cannot stay awake.
- A seizure, new weakness or numbness, or difficulty walking, balancing, understanding, speaking, or writing.
- Vision or hearing problems, a major change in behavior, or clear fluid from the ears or nose.
- Bleeding from an ear, bruising behind the ears, a dent in the head, or a wound with an object embedded in it.
- A high-speed impact to the head.
These warning signs are listed by the NHS head injury and concussion guidance, last reviewed 29 May 2025. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen before seeking emergency care.
When to get urgent advice after a head impact
Some symptoms or circumstances may require prompt medical advice even without the emergency signs above. NHS guidance recommends urgent advice for vomiting, dizziness, blood-thinning conditions or medicines, alcohol or drug use at the time of injury, or another concerning symptom. In the UK, the NHS route is 111; elsewhere, use the appropriate local urgent-care service. If advised to attend an emergency department, do not drive yourself after the head injury. (NHS)

Suspected concussion: stop skating and get assessed
A concussion can follow a blow or jolt to the head or body. It can be difficult to recognize, and symptoms may not appear immediately, so monitor the person rather than relying on how they seem right after the fall. The American Red Cross advises watching for deterioration such as altered behavior, vomiting, persistent headache, vision changes, or becoming unresponsive. Call emergency services if serious deterioration occurs. (American Red Cross head, neck, and spinal injury guidance)
Take the skater off the board and arrange assessment by a healthcare professional. The CDC’s guidance, dated 15 September 2025, says an athlete with a suspected concussion should remain out for the rest of the day and until cleared by a healthcare provider. Do not decide on your own that the injury is mild enough to skate through. (CDC HEADS UP: Responding to a Sports-related Concussion)

Or, wrap a string around your head, then measure the length of string with a yardstick. Size Large is recommended if your size is between 21.3-22.8 inch (54 cm-58 cm). The recommended Age Grading: 5 Years and Older
Possible fracture or serious limb injury
Pain, swelling, deformity, inability or unwillingness to move an area, numbness or tingling below the injury, or bone visible through the skin can indicate a fracture. A fall can also injure muscles and other tissues, so appearance alone cannot confirm what is damaged.

- Do not move or straighten the injured part. Have the person rest without moving it.
- For a closed injury, place a cold pack wrapped in a thin, dry towel over the area for no more than 20 minutes.
- For an open, bleeding wound, apply direct pressure to control bleeding.
- Get professional guidance. Call emergency services for severe or multiple injuries, signs of shock, or possible injury to the head, neck, spine, pelvis, or upper leg.
These first-aid steps follow the American Red Cross guidance on fractures.

Home monitoring after a minor head injury
Use home care only when the injury is considered minor and there are no emergency warning signs. NHS guidance says an adult should stay with the person for at least the first 24 hours. Rest is appropriate; a tired person does not need to be kept awake solely because of the injury. A wrapped ice pack can be applied for short periods. (NHS)
Seek medical reassessment if new or worsening danger signs appear. The NHS says head-injury symptoms can last up to two weeks and advises contacting a GP if symptoms last longer than two weeks or if there is uncertainty about returning to driving, work, school, or sport. If concussion is suspected, do not skate while symptomatic or before professional clearance.

Be prepared, but do not let a kit delay care
A basic first-aid kit can help with minor scrapes and small wounds; the American Red Cross recommends having one available. It is not a substitute for emergency care or professional assessment for suspected concussion, fracture, spinal injury, or serious bleeding. The Red Cross also offers first-aid and CPR/AED training for people who want to prepare to help in an emergency. (American Red Cross first aid steps)
