After a possible Candida auris (C. auris) exposure, first identify where and how it happened. If it involved a healthcare facility, contact the facility or your care team and ask whether your exposure is considered a link that warrants screening. Healthy family members and visitors generally do not need routine testing. Symptoms alone cannot tell you whether you have C. auris.
What to do first after a possible exposure
Write down the healthcare facility, dates, and circumstances of the possible exposure, then contact the care team or facility’s infection-prevention staff. Explain whether you shared a room, unit, or care area with someone who had C. auris, received care from the same staff during the same period, or used shared mobile medical equipment. Ask: “Was my exposure considered an epidemiologic link, and should I be screened?”
The facility or public-health team determines whether screening is appropriate and when it should happen, based on the exposure and local response. CDC guidance does not give one universal deadline for testing after exposure.
Does the exposure mean you need a test?
C. auris spreads mainly among patients in healthcare settings. A possible link in a facility may lead to screening, but ordinary contact with a patient as a family member or visitor generally does not mean a healthy person needs testing. CDC says screening family members and healthcare providers is usually unnecessary. People with serious underlying illness, complex healthcare needs, or invasive medical devices should ask their treating team about their particular exposure.

People without typical risk factors generally do not carry C. auris or become sick from it. The fungus most often affects people who are seriously ill and receiving complex care, particularly those with devices such as breathing tubes, feeding tubes, vascular catheters, or urinary catheters. This does not rule out risk for every person with a healthcare exposure; follow the facility’s or public-health team’s advice.
How C. auris screening works
For colonization screening, a healthcare provider usually collects a composite skin swab from both armpits and the groin and sends it to a laboratory. CDC describes the screening as painless and without risks. It is arranged through healthcare, not a consumer home test.

A positive screening result means C. auris was detected on the skin—known as colonization. It does not, by itself, mean you have an active infection. CDC says people who are colonized but have no symptoms should not be treated for C. auris and do not need retesting under its patient screening guidance. Treatment decisions for a suspected infection are a separate clinical matter.

Yes. Colonization means the fungus is present on the body, often the skin, without causing illness. A screening swab looks for colonization; it does not diagnose infection just because it is positive. Whether to screen depends on the healthcare exposure and the facility’s response, not on symptoms alone.

What symptoms can C. auris cause?
There is no distinctive symptom checklist that can identify C. auris. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says, “There is not a common set of symptoms specific for C. auris infections.” Symptoms vary with the affected site and severity; infection can involve the blood, wounds, or ears and may resemble other infections. Fever or chills can occur, but they do not establish that C. auris is the cause.
If you feel ill after a healthcare exposure, contact a clinician and mention the exposure, particularly if you have a serious underlying condition, complex care needs, or an invasive device. Seek urgent medical attention for severe or rapidly worsening illness. That is general safety advice; CDC does not specify a C. auris-specific emergency symptom cutoff.

What family members and visitors can do
- Clean your hands before entering and after leaving a patient’s room. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer when available, or wash with soap and water.
- If you provide high-touch care at home, such as bathing someone or changing a wound dressing, consider wearing gloves.
- If someone returns home with an invasive device, follow the treating provider’s instructions for its care.
- Tell a healthcare facility about a previous positive result or relevant exposure when arranging care or a transfer.
Hand hygiene is a practical precaution, not a test or treatment for C. auris. Do not use antifungal medicines or products meant for disinfecting surfaces on your skin.
