If Windows Defender appears inactive in Windows 11, first check whether another antivirus provider has taken over: that can be expected behavior, not a broken installation. Then verify real-time protection, refresh security intelligence, and choose a scan that fits the problem. “Windows Defender” commonly refers to Microsoft Defender Antivirus; Windows Security is the app where you check its status and settings.
1. Check which antivirus provider is active
A compatible antivirus product from another provider can switch Microsoft Defender Antivirus off automatically. Check the provider before trying to turn Defender back on.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Manage providers and check which antivirus provider is active.
If another antivirus provider is active, Defender’s inactive status may be the intended handoff rather than a fault. Avoid trying to run two antivirus engines at the same time. Microsoft says Defender should return to active mode after the other product is uninstalled; if you want Defender to provide protection, remove the other product and then check the provider status again.

2. Turn real-time protection on
When Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the provider you want to use, check its real-time protection setting:

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- In Windows Security, select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Manage settings.
- Switch Real-time protection on.
Microsoft notes that real-time protection can be turned off temporarily and will turn back on automatically after a short while. While it is off, files you open or download are not scanned in real time. Restore the setting promptly rather than treating an off state as a fix.
3. Refresh security intelligence and Windows updates
Out-of-date security intelligence can leave Defender without the latest threat information. Windows Update delivers security intelligence automatically, and you can also check for it from Windows Security.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Open Windows Security and select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Virus & threat protection updates, select Protection updates.
- Select Check for updates.
If Defender repeatedly reports update errors, follow Microsoft’s instructions for manually installing the latest protection updates. If Windows Update itself is failing, use Microsoft’s Windows 11 Windows Update troubleshooting guidance; do not assume that a security troubleshooter labeled for Windows 10 applies to Windows 11.
4. Run the scan that fits the concern
A quick scan is a useful initial check, but it does not rule out every infection. Choose a scan based on what you are seeing:

| Situation | Scan to choose | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Routine check or initial health check | Quick scan | A starting point; a clean result does not rule out every problem. |
| You suspect an infection | Full scan | Microsoft recommends a full scan when infection is suspected. Get the latest security intelligence before scanning for suspicious software. |
| Unwanted software persists | Microsoft Defender Offline | Microsoft recommends this escalation when unwanted software continues to persist. |
To start a scan, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, choose a scan option, and follow the on-screen prompts. For a persistent threat, use Defender Offline as Microsoft’s malware guidance directs.

- Protection or updates appear to be blocked by malware: follow Microsoft’s malware-removal guidance, update security intelligence if possible, and use Defender Offline when unwanted software persists.
- A Windows Security repair or reset is the only proposed fix: the Microsoft guidance covered here does not establish a general Windows Security app repair/reset procedure for this Windows 11 problem. Do not substitute the Microsoft troubleshooter labeled for Windows 10 as though it were a confirmed Windows 11 fix.
