A spike in reported crypto trading volume does not prove that you can buy or sell easily at a fair price. Volume counts trades over a period; liquidity depends on the bids and asks available for your particular trade, on a specific market, at a specific moment. Check the pair and venue, then compare spread, order-book depth, and estimated execution impact for your order size. A mismatch between high volume and thin visible liquidity is a reason to investigate—not proof of manipulation.
First, make sure you are checking the same market
Before comparing a volume figure with an order book, identify exactly what the figure covers. An asset’s aggregated volume may combine markets that you cannot access, while the market you intend to trade could be much thinner.
- Pair: Record both assets, such as BTC/USDT, rather than looking only at the token name.
- Venue and market type: Identify the exchange and whether the data is for spot trading, derivatives, or a specific decentralized exchange (DEX) pool.
- Quote currency: BTC/USDT and BTC/USD are separate markets, even if their prices are close.
- Time: Note when the volume and order-book data were captured, and the period covered by the volume figure.
- Order size: Use the amount you actually expect to trade when evaluating execution quality.
These details matter because liquidity is specific to a market and changes over time. A volume figure for an asset across several venues cannot establish that one pair on one exchange has enough orders for your trade.

What does the volume spike tell you—and what does it leave out?
Trading volume measures completed activity during a chosen period. It does not tell you how much buy or sell interest is currently resting near the market price. Order-book depth, by contrast, is the quantity of resting orders visible at a snapshot in time. A volume spike can therefore coincide with a thin book: the measurements cover different things and different time frames.

Volume is a useful signal of activity, but it is not an execution-quality score. It cannot, on its own, tell you the spread you will face, whether your order will consume several price levels, or the average price you will receive.
Check spread, depth, and execution impact in that order
1. Measure the spread
Compare the best available bid—the highest displayed buying price—with the best ask, or lowest displayed selling price. The difference is the spread. For a more comparable measure, calculate the midpoint as (best bid + best ask) ÷ 2, then express the spread as a percentage of that midpoint: (best ask − best bid) ÷ midpoint × 100.
A narrower spread is useful evidence about the top of the book, but it describes only the best displayed bid and ask. It does not show how many orders are available behind them or what happens when a larger order reaches deeper levels.

2. Record cumulative depth in stated price bands
Inspect the bids and asks beyond the best prices. Record the cumulative quantity available on each side within defined price bands around the midpoint, using the bands provided by the data source or exchange. Include the market, band, and timestamp with any depth figure.
Depth is a snapshot, not a promise that orders will remain available. A bare depth number without its price band and capture time cannot establish how much liquidity is available at another price or later moment.
3. Estimate the impact on your order size
Consider how far through the displayed levels an order of your intended size would go, and estimate its average execution price across those levels. Slippage is the difference between the requested or reference price and the resulting average execution price. Compare venues using the same order size and reference method; list trading fees separately so they do not get confused with market impact.

A small order may fit near the best bid or ask while a larger market order consumes several levels and receives a worse average price. The result depends on the current book and order size, not just the day’s volume.
How to compare the signals
Use the same pair, venue type, quote currency, timestamp, and intended trade size for each comparison. These measures answer different questions:
| Measure | What it tells you | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Trading volume | How much trading activity was reported over a stated period. | How much is resting near the current price or what price your order will receive. |
| Spread | The gap between the best displayed bid and ask at the time observed. | The amount available beyond those top prices. |
| Order-book depth | The cumulative visible quantity at specified price levels in a snapshot. | That the displayed orders will remain, or that another venue or time has similar depth. |
| Estimated execution impact | How the displayed levels may affect the average price for a specified order size. | Guaranteed execution: the book can change before or during a trade. |
| Provider ranking or score | How a provider evaluates or compares covered markets or venues under its own methodology. | A universal, fixed guarantee of execution quality. |
Also compare the pair’s current volume with its own recent behavior and with relevant venues’ volume, spread, and depth. A sharp rise in volume without a corresponding improvement in observed market quality is a prompt to examine the data and trading activity more closely; it is not, by itself, a finding of artificial volume.

How to interpret a high-volume, thin-depth mismatch
Look at several signals together rather than treating a volume-to-depth relationship as a manipulation detector. Volume accumulates over a period, while visible depth is observed at an instant. Liquidity can change, and displayed orders can be canceled; completed turnover and a shallow snapshot can therefore coexist without proving why.
There is a documented enforcement example, but it should not be generalized into a claim about other venues. In a March 19, 2021 order, the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission said transactions resulting from Coinbase programs matching orders with one another led Coinbase to report inaccurate volume and liquidity information. That case illustrates why reporting practices matter; it does not establish that a current spike elsewhere is artificial.
What a venue score can—and cannot—tell you
Read the provider’s methodology before relying on a ranking. Check what markets are covered, what inputs are measured, what benchmark is used, how often results are updated, and whether the score is relative to other venues or intended as an absolute measure.

CoinGecko’s Trust Score methodology, updated in 2026, says: “The Liquidity score takes into account factors such as trading volume, order book depth, spread, and trading activity across a selected set of trading pairs on an exchange.” CoinGecko says its Trust Scores are recalculated weekly and graded relative to the population of scored exchanges. Its methodology assigns 50% to liquidity, 20% to cybersecurity, 15% to regulation, 10% to incidents, and 5% to proof of reserves. Those weights describe CoinGecko’s scoring system only; they are not universal measures of liquidity or safety.
A score can help organize a venue comparison, but it cannot replace checking the exact pair and trade size. A venue’s overall rating may include factors beyond execution, and its result depends on the provider’s coverage, benchmark, and methodology.
For a DEX, check the pool and swap route
A centralized exchange order book does not describe liquidity in a particular automated market-maker pool. For a DEX trade, identify the pool, chain, and route the swap would use, then inspect that pool’s available liquidity and estimate the price impact for the intended swap. Keep the pool and route attached to the estimate: another pool or path can produce a different result.

Do not infer pool liquidity from an asset-wide volume total or assume every DEX uses the same liquidity mechanics. The relevant evidence is the current pool and route for the swap you intend to make.
Quick Recap
A practical pre-trade checklist
- Confirm the exact pair, venue or pool, market type, quote currency, and data timestamp.
- Note the volume period and compare the figure with that market’s recent baseline and relevant peers.
- Calculate the best-bid-to-best-ask spread, preferably as a percentage of the midpoint.
- Record cumulative bid and ask depth in stated price bands, with the snapshot time.
- Estimate average execution price and slippage for your intended order size; account for fees separately.
- Review the data provider’s coverage and scoring method before treating a ranking as evidence.
- If volume and market-quality signals diverge, investigate further without treating the mismatch as proof of wash trading.
