Start with the auditor’s opinion, then read the full financial statements and notes alongside the company’s operational and risk disclosures. To understand whether a cement producer’s results are sustainable, connect revenue, profit and cash flow to production, capacity, energy, logistics, debt and capital spending. Treat this as a reading method, not a universal compliance checklist: reporting frameworks, currencies, financial years and disclosures differ by company and jurisdiction.

Establish what the report covers

Before interpreting a figure, identify the reporting entity and basis. A report may present consolidated group accounts, parent-only accounts, or both; those figures answer different questions. Record the financial year end, period length, reporting currency and units, accounting framework, and comparative period. Note acquisitions, disposals, changes in control, restatements or a changed year-end, since each can make a headline year-on-year comparison misleading.

Check whether the company reports under IFRS Accounting Standards, local GAAP or another framework. The IFRS Foundation’s IAS 1 overview describes a complete set of financial statements as including a statement of financial position; statement or statements of profit or loss and other comprehensive income; statement of changes in equity; statement of cash flows; and notes, including accounting policies and explanatory information. Comparative information is generally required, although exact requirements depend on the applicable framework and circumstances.

Read the audit opinion before the highlights

Find the independent auditor’s report and identify whether the opinion is unmodified, qualified, adverse or a disclaimer. Read the basis paragraph and any explanation of the matters behind a modified opinion. “Audited” alone does not tell you whether the auditor raised a material issue or what the issue concerns. An adverse or qualified opinion applies to the matters described in that report; assess its implications for the particular balances and disclosures rather than treating it as a generic verdict on every figure.

Then read key audit matters and the report’s discussion of significant estimates. Key audit matters indicate issues that required significant auditor attention; they are not separate audit opinions on those matters. For example, Saudi Cement Company’s 2025 report identifies revenue recognition as a key audit matter, while Fujairah Cement Industries’ 2025 report gives an adverse opinion and discusses potential impairment of property, plant and equipment and right-of-use assets. These are company- and year-specific examples, not evidence that the same matters affect another issuer. Saudi Cement Company 2025 example; Fujairah Cement Industries 2025 example.

Test the financial story across statements

Revenue, margins and cash conversion

Compare revenue growth with disclosed sales volumes, prices or product mix, and with receivables, contract assets where relevant, inventories and operating cash flow. If receivables grow faster than sales, investigate the explanation and ageing; the difference is a prompt to look closer, not proof of a problem.

Read the revenue-recognition policy and any revenue-related key audit matter. Saudi Cement Company’s 2025 example says goods revenue is recognised when control transfers, generally on delivery. Another company’s contract terms and policy determine its own recognition point. Check domestic and export sales, delivery terms, cutoff, rebates, discounts, returns and related-party sales. Follow performance down the income statement: gross margin or equivalent, operating profit, finance costs, tax and net profit. Separate ordinary trading results from one-off gains, asset sales, acquisitions, foreign-exchange effects and impairments. If management highlights EBITDA or another adjusted measure, check its definition and reconcile it to audited figures.

Next, trace profit into cash. Compare operating cash flow with profit over several periods, then account for working-capital movements, cash interest and tax, capital expenditure, acquisitions, debt repayments and dividends. Payment timing or a major project can distort one year, so avoid treating one period as a settled pattern.

Balance sheet, debt and liquidity

Map borrowings by currency, fixed or variable rate, maturity, security, covenants and lender concentration. Include lease liabilities and material guarantees. Compare cash and committed facilities with near-term debt maturities and working-capital needs. Reconcile any management claim such as “net cash” or “debt-free” to reported balances and the company’s stated definition.

Review working capital in the context of how the business operates: clinker, cement, fuel and spare-parts inventory; receivable ageing and expected credit losses; supplier balances; and related-party loans. Where stockpile quantities or valuation are material estimates, see what the notes and auditor say about the measurement.

Capital spending, assets and obligations

Compare capital expenditure with depreciation, maintenance needs, announced projects and capacity actually commissioned. Look for cost changes, delays, contractual commitments and funding sources. Ask whether the expansion is supported by demand and whether new capacity is being used; spending or a target is not the same as completed, productive capacity.

For property, plant and equipment, inspect asset lives, depreciation methods, additions, disposals, idle assets, construction in progress and impairment testing. Where disclosed, examine recoverable-value assumptions such as prices, volumes, costs, discount rates and useful lives. Fujairah Cement Industries’ 2025 report is a specific example of an adverse opinion discussing potential impairment indicators affecting property, plant and equipment and right-of-use assets; it is a reason to inspect the relevant notes in the report you are reading, not a sector-wide conclusion. Fujairah Cement Industries report example.

Read provisions and contingencies for mine restoration, environmental obligations, litigation, tax disputes, employee benefits, guarantees and onerous commitments. Note the stated basis, timing and uncertainty of amounts. Understand the group structure too: subsidiaries, associates, joint ventures, non-controlling interests, related-party transactions and changes in control can affect both reported results and who bears risks. If the report includes parent-only as well as group statements, use each for the question it answers.

Connect operating measures to cement economics

Cement production typically involves preparing raw materials, making clinker in a kiln, then grinding clinker with gypsum and other materials to produce cement. This sequence helps explain why capacity and cost figures need context: a grinding unit can raise cement capacity without a matching increase in clinker capacity.

Ambuja Cements’ FY 2025–26 report describes this production sequence and reports company-specific indicators including clinker and cement production, installed capacity, energy use, fuel substitution and green power. Use such disclosures to connect operating performance with financial results, while checking that definitions and units are comparable across years and companies. Ambuja Cements FY 2025–26 report.

Where disclosed, examine these operating measures:

  • Clinker and cement production, sales volumes and capacity utilisation.
  • Installed and usable capacity, commissioning dates, ramp-up, shutdowns and bottlenecks.
  • Clinker factor and supplementary cementitious materials such as fly ash or slag.
  • Thermal and electrical energy per tonne, fuel mix, waste co-processing and power sourcing.
  • Access to and costs of limestone and other raw materials.
  • Freight, rail, road and sea logistics, distribution reach and delivered costs.
  • Product mix, exports, selling prices and regional demand.

Relate these measures to costs and margins. For a new unit or expansion, check which stage of production it adds, what has been commissioned, utilisation to date and cash spent against stated milestones. Management’s capacity targets are plans, not achieved output.

Use risk and sustainability disclosures as cross-checks

Risks described outside the financial statements should connect to assumptions, provisions or operating plans where relevant. Look for exposure to fuel and energy prices, logistics disruption, construction demand, competition, foreign exchange, interest rates, climate and emissions rules, water, quarry access, safety and project execution. Where mitigations are described, see whether the report gives measurable actions, costs, timelines or investment.

Match environmental claims with disclosed emissions, energy, water and capital plans, distinguishing targets from achieved outcomes. An integrated-report presentation by itself does not establish that sustainability information has been assured or that the company complies with a particular regulation.

Compare companies carefully—and account for IFRS 18

Peer comparisons work only when the underlying bases are sufficiently alike. Normalize or clearly flag reporting period, consolidation scope, accounting policies, segment definitions, currency, volume units and the treatment of acquisitions, disposals, restatements, inflation and foreign-exchange effects. Check definitions before comparing operating profit, EBITDA, net debt or cost per tonne. For cement producers, useful comparison axes include margins and cash conversion; debt and liquidity; capacity utilisation and project execution; energy and logistics cost per tonne; clinker factor and product mix; asset age and impairment assumptions; geographic, currency and regulatory exposure; and audit opinion and reporting framework.

There is no cement-sector benchmark in the cited material for a universal margin, debt level or operating cost. The IFRS Foundation reported in 2024 that an IASB study found “Over 60 of 100 companies reported a figure for operating profit, using at least nine different ways to calculate it.” This is a general-company comparability statistic, not a cement-industry benchmark; the Foundation passage does not identify the underlying study’s year. IFRS Foundation announcement, 9 April 2024.

IFRS 18 replaces IAS 1 and applies to annual reporting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2027; early application is permitted. Among its changes are defined profit-or-loss subtotals, including operating profit, and disclosures about management-defined performance measures. Check the period covered and the company’s adoption note rather than assuming it has adopted early. IASB Chair Andreas Barckow described IFRS 18 as “the most significant change to companies’ presentation of financial performance since IFRS Accounting Standards were introduced more than 20 years ago.” IFRS Foundation announcement, 9 April 2024.
