Before switching to a 5G plan or buying a 5G phone in Canada, check signal where you actually use your phone, compare the full cost and written plan terms, and confirm that the exact phone model works with your chosen provider for LTE, 5G, and VoLTE. National coverage figures—and a phone’s “5G” label—cannot guarantee service at your address or compatibility with a particular network.
What should I check before switching to a 5G plan?
Start with the places and services that matter to you, rather than the advertised network tier. Compare providers available at your home, workplace, commute, and regular travel destinations. Check both 5G and LTE coverage, and ask about indoor reception if you rely on your phone inside buildings.
Coverage maps are a starting point, not a guarantee
The CRTC’s 2026 Canadian Telecommunications Market Report reports that 5G networks were available to 94.3% of Canada’s population in 2024. The same CRTC data puts 2024 access at 75.2% for people in rural areas and 52.2% for people on First Nations reserves; the report states that no 5G coverage was reported in the Territories. These are population-access measures, not guarantees of indoor reception, service along a particular highway, or usable speed at a specific address.

An area without reported 5G may still have LTE service.

Check the provider’s coverage map and ISED’s National Broadband Map for the locations you use. Map information is evolving: in January 2026, the CRTC announced access to more detailed provider, technology, and speed data and launched a consultation on standardized mobile coverage reporting. Where possible, use the provider’s trial period to test service in your own routine.
Compare the actual plan, not just the 5G label
Make a side-by-side comparison of offers available where you live. The CRTC suggests checking what the rate includes, upfront and one-time charges, fees for calling features, effects on bundled services, restrictions or fees for changing features, required terms, and cancellation fees. Its plan guidance and provider and plan selection resources can help you identify options.

| What to compare | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Coverage and reliability | Does the provider cover home, work, your commute, and frequent rural routes? Is LTE available where 5G is not? Will indoor reception meet your needs? |
| Total cost | What is the monthly plan price plus device payments, upfront charges, add-ons, and any remaining device balance or final payment? |
| Data and speed | How much high-speed data is included? What happens when it is used? Are there hotspot restrictions or speed and fair-use limits in the written offer, including on plans described as “unlimited”? |
| Travel and roaming | What applies to domestic roaming and travel outside your home area? What are the international rates or add-ons? |
| Flexibility | Is prepaid or postpaid a better fit? What is the contract or financing duration, what would cancellation cost, and can you keep your number? |
Ask for the offer’s written terms and check promotional eligibility before deciding. Plan details and prices change, so do not assume that a particular 5G tier is necessary or that “unlimited” means unrestricted speed or use.
Will my phone work on a Canadian 5G network?
Not necessarily. A phone advertised as 5G is not automatically compatible with every Canadian provider, and 5G support alone does not establish that voice calls will work. Check the exact model number and regional variant with the provider you intend to use.

Confirm the exact model and network support
- Ask the provider whether the exact variant supports its 4G/LTE network, 5G service, and VoLTE calling. Ask about emergency calling as well as ordinary calls.
- Check that the phone is unlocked and supports the SIM or eSIM arrangement you need. Confirm any account or device restrictions with the provider.
- If you are keeping your current phone, ask the new provider to check its model or IMEI and SIM status before you cancel your existing service.
- Compare the phone’s total cost if bought outright with its financing cost, including any return condition or final payment. Keep device cost separate from the plan price.
There is no universal band checklist established here that can guarantee compatibility across Canadian providers. Do not rely on a product-family name or generic “5G” claim instead of the carrier’s confirmation for your model variant.
Check VoLTE and 3G shutdown implications
The CRTC warns that the phase-out of 3G can affect older phones and some older 4G devices. Its 3G phase-out guidance states: “Once 3G networks are phased-out, all voice calling will be done over Voice over LTE (VoLTE).” Provider timelines vary. Contact your provider or check the device manual and model number to establish whether your phone needs replacement.

What switching protections and number-porting checks matter?
The CRTC says every Canadian with a mobile plan is covered by the Wireless Code. The Code applies to wireless services whether they are standalone or bundled and whether purchased online, by phone, or in person. Read the simplified Wireless Code and consumer guidance for the rules and their application.

- The CRTC’s consumer guidance describes a 15-day period to return a device if you are unhappy with the service, subject to using no more than half of the monthly allowance.
- The Code includes limits on overage and roaming charges, and allows cancellation without fees after two years.
The simplified Code identifies amendments that take effect on April 13, 2027. Treat those as future changes until that date; do not assume their notification details are already in force.

If you want to keep your number, check the CRTC’s provider-switching guidance before disconnecting your old service. Confirm portability, any outstanding device financing or cancellation conditions, and whether changing providers will affect the price of bundled services.
How can I avoid roaming charges and bill shock?
Domestic roaming means your phone connects to another provider’s network in Canada. A plan may charge for data outside its local coverage area even if calls and texts are Canada-wide. International roaming can separately charge for calls, texts, or data. Near the US border, a phone may connect to a US network unintentionally.
Ask your provider about rates, coverage boundaries, and travel add-ons before you go. Near the border or when you do not want roaming, you can disable data roaming or manually select a network. The CRTC’s roaming guidance describes a $100 international roaming cap per billing cycle unless you consent to more. The simplified Code also spells out $50 data-overage and $100 data-roaming caps; related amendments listed there take effect on April 13, 2027, so check the current Code wording rather than assuming future notification requirements already apply.
