Before investing in a gold or copper royalty company, examine the contracts that generate its revenue, how much cash comes from producing mines, and how dependent that cash is on particular projects, operators, metals, and jurisdictions. A royalty company may avoid many direct mine-operating costs, but it still relies on other companies to build and run mines—and on commodity markets to support their economics. This is a due-diligence framework, not a recommendation to buy or sell a security.

Understand what the company actually owns

The contract—not the label “royalty company”—determines what the company is entitled to receive. A royalty is generally a contractual payment tied to minerals produced or to a property’s revenue or profit. A stream is different: the company pays an upfront deposit for the right to buy a defined portion of future production on terms set by the agreement.

These interests are generally not working interests. A working-interest owner may hold part of a property and be liable for a share of its capital, operating, or environmental costs. A royalty or stream holder may avoid those ordinary mine costs, but its returns still depend on the mine and the operator.

Interest type What to establish in the contract Why the label is not enough
Production-based royalty How production is measured, which minerals and areas are covered, and whether thresholds or other conditions apply. The payment depends on the agreement’s production formula and the mine’s output.
Gross-revenue or net-smelter-return royalty The rate, covered sales, permitted deductions, and any thresholds or adjustments. Two percentages are not directly comparable if they apply to different revenue bases or deductions.
Net-profit royalty Which costs may be deducted, how profit is calculated, and what accounting or reporting rights apply. Allowable costs can affect the amount payable even when production continues.
Metal stream The upfront payment, share of production, purchase price or other purchase terms, duration, and covered metal. The holder buys metal under defined terms; it does not simply receive a royalty percentage.

For each material interest, record the property and covered geographic area, commodity, rate or purchase formula, deductions, term, and any buy-down, buyback, or competing rights. Check what the issuer discloses about enforceability, contract interpretation, geographic scope, and the operator’s compliance with its obligations. Gold Royalty’s August 2026 interim risk disclosure identifies these as potential issues for its interests.

Separate revenue today from possible revenue later

Classify assets as producing, under development, or in exploration. Then compare actual recent contributions with management’s forecasts. A development or exploration interest may produce no revenue for years—or ever. Its path to revenue can depend on financing, permits, construction, infrastructure, commissioning, and operating performance, much of which is outside the royalty holder’s control.

In its August 2026 interim risk disclosure, Gold Royalty said a substantial majority of its interests were on non-producing properties and might never achieve production. That warning applies to Gold Royalty’s disclosed portfolio, not automatically to every royalty company. For any issuer, identify the operator’s stated plans and the unresolved steps before projected production could begin.

Measure concentration by revenue and exposure

A long list of interests can create an impression of diversification while a few mines still drive results. Look for revenue contributions by individual property, operator, country or jurisdiction, and metal. Check whether a shutdown, delay, or change in one operator’s plans could materially affect the company.

Royal Gold reported that Mount Milligan, Pueblo Viejo, Cortez, and Andacollo together generated approximately 55% of its revenue in 2024. This is a historical, company-specific concentration figure—not a current estimate for Royal Gold and not a sector benchmark. Use each issuer’s own recent disclosures to assess its portfolio.

Trace the metal exposure back to mine economics

Check which metal a contract covers, what metal drives the underlying mine’s economics, and whether the contractual rate changes with price or production. A copper royalty, for example, can be affected by copper prices as well as mine costs, other products, and operator decisions. By-product metals and thresholds can also make a project’s exposure less obvious than its headline commodity suggests.

Royal Gold’s 2024 Form 10-K says its revenue is directly tied to metal prices and particularly sensitive to gold prices because most of its revenue comes from gold stream and royalty interests. The company also warns that price changes can affect operators’ production and development decisions. Treat issuer statements as disclosures about that issuer, and examine the relevant portfolio rather than generalizing from one company.

Assess the operators and the places where projects operate

Because the royalty holder typically does not run the mine, assess the operator’s ability to finance, develop, and operate it. Review project execution, permitting, safety and environmental matters, community relations, and the operator’s record of meeting plans. Also consider the host jurisdiction’s political and fiscal conditions, permitting environment, and security of tenure.

A passive position can limit direct operational responsibility without removing exposure to operational outcomes. Delays, interruptions, permit problems, or deteriorating project economics can affect whether and when the royalty holder receives revenue. Gold Royalty’s filing also identifies jurisdictional, environmental, Indigenous opposition, and financing-related risks.

Check the royalty company’s finances and acquisition discipline

A portfolio can grow while the company’s financial risk rises. Review operating cash flow, debt maturities, interest burden, liquidity, share issuance, and dividend commitments. Consider whether acquisitions or other growth plans appear to require external financing, and whether the company has disclosed how it assesses the prices it pays for assets.

Gold Royalty identifies acquisition strategy, additional financing, indebtedness, and acquisition valuations among its risks. Those are useful topics to investigate at any issuer, but the specific disclosure is not a substitute for reviewing that company’s latest financial statements and commitments.

Test disclosure quality and the limits of available information

Read the issuer’s latest annual report and interim filings, then compare project statements with current disclosures from the mine operators where available. A royalty holder may rely on operator-provided information and have limited access to underlying mine data, which can make it harder to verify forecasts independently.

  • Distinguish reserves from resources and exploration targets; they are not interchangeable measures of project certainty.
  • Separate reported production from planned or forecast production.
  • Note when a projection relies on third-party disclosures, and whether the operator has updated its plans or assumptions.

Royal Gold discusses reliance on property-operator disclosures and limited access to underlying information. Gold Royalty’s interim filing describes risks to its non-producing interests. These issuer disclosures identify possible uncertainties; they do not independently verify mine forecasts.

Compare companies on like-for-like evidence

When evaluating more than one issuer, compare the same dimensions using each company’s latest available disclosures. A useful comparison should make differences in cash generation, contract terms, exposure, and financing visible rather than relying on a headline asset count or a single valuation multiple.

Comparison dimension What to line up
Revenue stage Share of revenue from producing assets versus interests that depend on future development or exploration.
Concentration Revenue by property, operator, and jurisdiction; note any single exposure capable of changing results materially.
Commodity mix Gold, copper, and by-product exposure, including which metal drives each underlying mine’s economics.
Contract terms Royalty or stream type, rate or purchase formula, deductions, duration, and rights that could change the interest.
Execution and location Operator quality, project status, jurisdiction, permitting, and other material operating or social risks.
Funding and disclosure Debt, liquidity, reliance on new capital, acquisition discipline, and how readily operator information can be checked.

What this checklist can—and cannot—tell you

This analysis can help identify where a company’s cash flows may be vulnerable and which claims need closer verification. It cannot establish whether a particular share price is attractive, predict future metal prices, or independently confirm a mine’s forecasts. Those judgments require current company and operator information, the relevant contracts where available, and an assessment of your own financial circumstances.
