Before installing a third-party Android launcher, check who publishes it, what its Google Play listing and privacy policy say about data, why it requests each permission, where you are downloading it from, and whether you can restore your phone’s built-in Home app. Reviews and security scans can help you assess risk, but neither proves that an app is safe, private, or right for your device.
1. Check the developer and whether the app appears maintained
Look at the developer name, update information, ratings, download count, and recent reviews on the app’s listing. Check that the publisher identity and app details make sense together, and read recent feedback for issues relevant to your phone or the features you need. Google recommends considering ratings, downloads, and individual reviews when assessing an app (Google’s Android app-safety guidance).
These are clues, not proof. A high rating does not establish that an app handles data appropriately, and a recent update alone does not establish quality. Treat reviews as prompts to investigate specific problems rather than as a security audit.
2. Read Data safety alongside the privacy policy
For an app distributed on Google Play, open its listing, expand Data safety, and select See details. Google says this section describes the developer-reported sum of an app’s data collection and sharing across versions distributed on Play (Google Play Data safety details). Check what data categories are listed, their stated purposes, whether data is shared, and what security practices the developer reports. Then read the linked privacy policy, looking for details that help explain those declarations and how the app’s features use information.

Data safety is a disclosure to evaluate, not an independent audit or a complete account of every interaction. Google’s rules include exceptions: some access that stays on the device and some ephemeral processing need not be declared as collection; certain transfers also need not be declared as sharing. Practices may vary by app use, region, and age. If the listing, policy, and features seem difficult to reconcile, seek a clear explanation before installing.
3. Question permissions and special access
For each permission or special-access prompt, ask what feature needs it, whether you can decline it, and whether a narrower option would be enough. A request that is not clearly connected to the launcher’s features deserves an explanation before you grant it.

Installed-app inventory is considered personal and sensitive information under Google Play policy. A launcher may have a reason to see apps so it can display or organize them, but policy restricts broad QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES visibility to situations where broad awareness is needed and a narrower query will not work. The policy also requires prominent disclosure and consent when sensitive-data use may be outside a user’s reasonable expectations; these are developer requirements, not proof that any particular app complies (Google Play’s user-data policy).
4. Prefer a reputable installation source
When the app is available on Google Play, that is the preferred installation source. Google warns that downloading apps from unknown sources can put the device and personal information at risk (Android app-safety guidance). If you choose to install from outside Play, make sure the download comes from the developer’s genuine site and that the app identity matches. A successful installation does not by itself establish that the file or its data practices are trustworthy.

5. Leave Google Play Protect enabled
Google says Play Protect checks apps before download from Play and scans the device for potentially harmful apps from other sources. It may warn about, deactivate, or remove an app it identifies as harmful (Google Play Protect information). Keep it on, but do not treat a clean scan as an endorsement of an app’s privacy, quality, or compatibility. It is one protective layer, not a guarantee.
6. Confirm compatibility and know how to switch back
Before making a launcher the default, check that it supports your phone’s Android version and the features you rely on. Also find the instructions for restoring the built-in Home app for your exact phone model and software version. Android Help notes that steps can vary by device, and its general guidance does not give one universal menu path for changing the default launcher (Android Help: change app settings). Consult your phone maker’s current instructions rather than assuming the same settings path applies everywhere.

If you are deciding between two apps, compare like with like rather than choosing on feature count alone.

- Publisher and maintenance: developer identity, update information, and relevant recent reviews.
- Permissions: each requested permission or special access, its feature-related reason, and whether a narrower option works.
- Data practices: Play Data safety declarations, the privacy policy, and how those statements fit the features you plan to use.
- Installation source: whether it is available through Play or requires a download from elsewhere.
- Device fit: support for your Android version and the functions you depend on.
- Reversibility: how to restore your phone’s built-in Home app if you change your mind.
