Before installing a job-application browser extension, check two separate approvals: the browser permissions it requests and any account access you authorize. Confirm that each permission matches a feature you want, understand what data the developer collects and retains, and know how to revoke access. Chrome and Google provide useful examples below; other browsers and account providers may use different permission names and controls.
1. Check who made the extension and what it does
Read the extension’s store listing, developer identity, support information, and linked privacy policy. Its stated purpose should explain why it needs the websites or account data named in its prompts. Chromium recommends considering both the installation permissions and the privacy policy or other disclosures linked from the listing (Chromium Extensions Security FAQ).
A listing or privacy policy tells you what the developer claims; it does not independently prove how the extension behaves. Check the information for the specific extension you are considering.

2. Understand the browser permission prompt
In Chrome, a request for “Your data on all the websites you visit” can allow an extension to read, request, or modify data on every site you visit—including sensitive pages such as a bank account. Chrome’s permission guidance also describes possible access to browsing history, tabs and browsing activity, location, clipboard data, and installed apps or extensions (Chrome Web Store Help: Understand extension permissions).

A warning describes what an extension may be able to do; it is not, by itself, evidence that the extension is malicious. The practical question is whether the requested access is needed for the advertised feature. For example, access to particular job sites might support a job-saving or application-filling feature, but a request covering every site deserves a clear explanation.
Chrome Web Store policy says extensions should request the narrowest permissions needed for their features. Chrome also supports optional permissions that an extension can request after installation, rather than asking for them upfront (Chrome Web Store Program Policies: Permissions). If a broad request is unexplained, pause, ask the developer, or decline it.

3. Review account authorization separately
A browser permission and an account-provider authorization are different grants. Approving one does not explain or automatically approve the other. Read each prompt rather than treating a “Continue with Google” button as a single generic sign-in step.
Google’s “Sign in with Google” can share basic profile details such as your name, email address, and profile picture. A separate Google authorization may request access to services such as Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Photos, or Contacts, and may permit viewing or copying data—or managing it. Check both the data categories and the actions the screen says the app can take (Google Account Help: Share some access to your Google Account data with apps; Google Account Help: Manage your third-party connections).

Do not enter your Google Account password into a third-party extension or service. Google warns that giving a third party your password would give it full access to your account. Use Google’s own authorization screen, and grant only access you understand and trust (Google Account Help: Share some access to your Google Account data with apps).
4. Read the data-use and deletion terms
Look for clear answers to these questions in the extension’s privacy policy and related disclosures:

- What information does it collect, and why?
- Is information shared with other parties, and who can see it?
- How is it protected, and how long is it retained?
- How can you request deletion, including deletion of data already copied to the developer’s servers?
- Where can you find updated terms if the policy changes?
Chrome Web Store policy sets requirements for extensions that handle personal or sensitive user data. Google likewise advises users to consider security, data use, deletion, policy changes, and data visibility. The third-party service’s own retention policy governs how long it stores data it receives, and information may be copied to that service’s servers (Chrome Web Store Program Policies: Limited Use; Google Account Help: Manage your third-party connections).
Policy language is not proof of an independent audit or that the extension’s implementation matches its disclosures. The specific extension’s behavior and security posture cannot be established from general permission guidance alone.

5. Compare extensions on the same criteria
If you are choosing between multiple extensions, compare the actual prompts and disclosures rather than relying on a general impression of safety.

| Account scopes | Which services and data categories are requested, and whether the app can read, edit, create, or delete data. |
| Feature fit | Whether each requested permission has a clear connection to the extension’s advertised features. |
| Data handling | Clarity about collection, sharing, storage, retention, security, and deletion. |
| Developer and controls | Whether the developer and support channel are identifiable, and whether you can revoke access. |
6. Know how to revoke access
For a Google authorization, review connected third-party apps and services in your Google Account settings and remove access for an app you no longer trust or use. Google says that once you revoke access, the third party can no longer access your Google Account data. Revocation does not guarantee deletion of information the service already received; you may need to contact the developer to request that deletion (Google Account Help: Manage your third-party connections).
Check separately whether the extension has its own account or locally stored data and follow its deletion instructions. Account-provider controls and developer-side deletion are not necessarily the same thing.

What these checks can—and cannot—tell you
Chrome and Google’s guidance explains how their permission and account controls work; it does not establish how a particular job-application extension behaves. Browser labels, account screens, and extension practices can change, so inspect the current store listing, permission prompt, consent screen, and privacy policy for the extension you plan to use.
There is no figure here estimating the risk of job-application extensions: the cited guidance describes capabilities and user controls, not a measured rate of harm. A decision should therefore turn on the specific access requested and the developer’s disclosures, not an unsupported risk statistic.
