Before connecting an AI agent to an ERP or accounting system, define exactly what it may do, which identity and permissions it will use, which actions require approval, and how you will detect and investigate misuse. Keep authorization and business-rule checks in the ERP or a trusted execution layer—not in the model—and test the complete connection in a non-production environment before enabling it for finance work.

1. Define the task and the permitted actions

Start with the finance workflow, not the connector’s full capability list. Write down the specific task the agent is meant to perform and the operations it needs. “Help reconcile invoices” is not a permission definition: the agent might need to read invoices and prepare a proposed match, but not update a vendor record or post a transaction.

  • Read: retrieve specified records or fields.
  • Prepare: draft a journal, reconciliation, payment instruction, or record change for review without submitting it.
  • Update: change a defined field or record.
  • Post or execute: commit a transaction or trigger an external action.

Specify which records, fields, tools, and actions are in scope, and exclude capabilities the workflow does not require. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet recommends minimizing available tools and scoping permissions per tool. A workflow that only needs read access should not inherit write permissions through an extension or integration.

2. Decide which identity the agent uses

Establish whether the agent acts as a named user or as an autonomous service identity. These patterns have different implications for attribution, permissions, credential ownership, and revocation. Record who owns the identity, how credentials are issued and rotated, what authority it carries, and how access is revoked when the agent, workflow, or owner changes.

NIST’s NCCoE concept paper, released February 5, 2026, describes agent identity and authorization as an area with open design questions, including how to bind an agent’s identity to a human and demonstrate its authority for a particular action. It is a project concept paper, not a finalized agent-identity standard. See Accelerating the Adoption of Software and AI Agent Identity and Authorization.

Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations example

Microsoft’s documentation for its Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations MCP server says requests require an authenticated user. A delegated agent uses the chatting user’s identity; an autonomous agent uses its own identity, and application permissions follow the authenticated identity. Microsoft states, “The MCP server doesn’t elevate privilege.” This describes that product implementation only; it should not be assumed of other ERP connectors. See Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 ERP MCP security documentation.

3. Enforce least privilege at both layers

Limit what the agent can call and what its connecting identity can do in the ERP. Apply the narrowest practical access to tools, actions, records, and fields; separate read and write access where possible; and use a dedicated integration identity when that fits the workflow and identity model. Check permissions in the ERP or a trusted execution layer on every request. A model’s own judgment is not an authorization control.

OWASP describes this as complete mediation: authorization should be implemented downstream rather than delegated to the language model. Its LLM06:2025 Excessive Agency guidance puts it plainly: “Implement authorization in downstream systems rather than relying on an LLM to decide if an action is allowed or not.”

For Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, Microsoft says MCP requests use supported application APIs rather than direct database access and are subject to the application’s roles, duties, privileges, record-level security, and data policies. It also says, “A transaction that would be rejected in the application client is also rejected when attempted through the MCP server.” Ask other vendors to explain how their own integrations enforce permissions and business rules; do not treat the Dynamics example as evidence about another product.

4. Set approval rules for consequential actions

Decide which operations your organization classifies as high impact, then require meaningful human approval before the agent executes them. Depending on your workflow and risk tolerance, candidate actions might include posting a journal, initiating a payment, changing vendor or bank details, bulk-updating records, changing access, or deleting financial data. These are policy choices, not a universal list.

The reviewer should be able to see the exact proposed action and its target—such as the affected account, vendor, amount, or records—and the approval should be enforced by the ERP or trusted execution layer. An approval prompt that can be bypassed by another route does not establish a dependable control.

Use risk-based thresholds rather than prompting for every low-risk step. NIST warns that repeated consent requests can create fatigue and encourage people to click through without meaningful review; see NIST’s discussion of identity and agentic AI. OWASP’s agent security guidance also recommends human approval for high-impact actions.

5. Treat business content as untrusted input

Invoices, emails, attachments, and ERP records can contain text that attempts to redirect an agent or persuade it to take an unauthorized action. OWASP identifies direct and indirect prompt injection as agent risks. A document’s instructions should not override the workflow’s defined permissions or approval rules.

  • Limit available actions so that a successful injection cannot grant the agent broader authority.
  • Validate every resulting operation against ERP access policy and business rules.
  • Test with adversarial documents and messages, including attempts to change payment details, disclose records, or bypass approval.

NIST’s AI 600-1 Generative Artificial Intelligence Profile recommends red-teaming for prompt injection and regularly assessing whether controls remain effective.

6. Map where ERP data goes and how long it stays

Trace data beyond the ERP connector. Identify which components can receive or retain ERP data: the connector, agent client or runtime, model service, logs, memory, analytics, and secondary tools or external integrations. Check who can access exports and logs, what retention applies, and which data-governance controls are relevant to your records and jurisdictions.

Microsoft says its Dynamics MCP server does not store customer data, but says data movement and retention outside the ERP environment depend on the agent client and external systems. That statement applies to the documented Dynamics implementation, not to other connectors or services. The organization must assess the full path the data takes, including any connected tools.

7. Make agent actions attributable and investigable

Decide what evidence your finance, security, and audit teams would need to reconstruct an agent run. To the extent your systems support it, log the agent identity, initiating user or human owner, task or run identifier, operation, target, authorization decision, approval, timestamp, and result. Protect logs from unauthorized changes and ensure the relevant teams can investigate unusual activity.

NIST’s NCCoE concept paper raises the question, “How do we ensure that agents log their actions and intent in a tamper-proof and verifiable manner?” It is a question posed in the paper, not a universal logging requirement. U.S. federal banking agencies’ 2021 interagency guidance notes the role of transaction and audit logs in investigation and accountability; that guidance is scoped to financial institutions, not a blanket requirement for every business. Choose log fields, access, and retention for your own system, risk, and applicable obligations.

8. Verify the integration and rehearse failures before rollout

Ask the ERP vendor and agent provider for concrete answers about the implementation you plan to use. “AI-ready” does not establish how a particular connection authenticates, enforces access, or handles data.

  • Which identity is authenticated: a delegated user, a dedicated agent, or a shared service account? How is it owned, revoked, and attributed?
  • How do tool and action scopes map to ERP roles, records, and read/write permissions?
  • Are requests processed through supported APIs, and which ERP validations and workflows run?
  • Which agent clients and external tools can connect, and where can each retain or transmit data?
  • Which audit events are generated, and can teams reconstruct an action and its approval?

In a non-production environment, test denied permissions, expired and revoked identities, injected content, approval bypass attempts, duplicate requests, and logging failures. Confirm the expected result for each case, including whether the ERP blocks the operation and whether the event is visible to the people responsible for response. NIST AI 600-1 recommends security evaluation, red-teaming, and recurring checks.

Compare integration options on controls, not labels

If you are evaluating more than one connection method, compare the evidence for each control rather than relying on a general claim that a product supports AI agents. The exact capabilities and implementation details vary by vendor and integration.

Evaluation area What to establish
Identity Whether access is delegated, uses a dedicated agent identity, or relies on a shared service identity; who owns it; and how it is revoked and attributed. NIST NCCoE identifies agent identity and authorization as open design questions.
Authorization Whether tool and action scopes are distinct, read and write access can be separated, record-level controls apply, and authorization is enforced downstream. OWASP recommends least privilege and downstream authorization.
Business rules Whether the connection uses supported APIs and preserves the ERP’s workflow and validation controls. Microsoft documents this behavior for its Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations MCP implementation only.
Human control Whether high-impact actions require approval, reviewers can see the exact action and target, and prompts are designed to avoid consent fatigue.
Data handling What the connector, agent runtime, model service, logs, memory, and connected tools store or transmit, and what retention applies.
Audit and response Whether actions can be attributed and reconstructed, unusual activity monitored, and the agent’s access promptly revoked.

Match controls to your obligations and risk

Legal and regulatory obligations depend on the organization, jurisdiction, industry, records, and system. Map the proposed use to the requirements that actually apply rather than treating a general framework as a universal mandate. For example, NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3 concerns Controlled Unclassified Information in nonfederal systems; it does not automatically apply to every accounting system. See NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3. The U.S. banking agencies’ authentication guidance likewise has a financial-institution scope. Consult your organization’s security, compliance, and legal teams about the specific deployment.
