Before you buy an unlocked phone or move your number, check the exact device’s IMEI with the carrier you plan to use, confirm it is actually unlocked, and verify the services and SIM type you need. “Unlocked” means the phone is not restricted to one carrier; it does not guarantee that its hardware or software works fully on another network.

Check the exact phone with the carrier before you pay

Start with the destination carrier’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) compatibility checker. You need the phone’s exact model or variant and its IMEI—not just its brand or family name. Different regional or carrier variants of the same phone can have different network capabilities. T-Mobile says its IMEI checker assesses device capabilities and compatibility; AT&T and Verizon also provide BYOD guidance and eligibility checks.

  • Ask the seller for the exact model number and regional variant.
  • Ask for the IMEI and enter it in the intended carrier’s checker before buying. If the seller will not provide it, ask whether you can verify compatibility before the return period ends.
  • Read the result closely. A carrier may distinguish full from partial compatibility, or may not guarantee functionality or performance for a phone it did not sell. T-Mobile notes that partial compatibility can mean reduced coverage or slower speeds.

An IMEI result is a useful eligibility check, not a promise of identical performance everywhere. T-Mobile describes limitations on what it can guarantee for non-T-Mobile devices in its BYOD compatibility guidance.

Verify the phone is unlocked—and know when it will be

Ask the carrier the phone is currently associated with to confirm its unlock status. A seller’s description is not a substitute for checking with the carrier. If the phone is still locked, ask whether it qualifies for unlocking and how long the process will take; do not assume it can be unlocked immediately.

Unlocking removes a carrier restriction, but it does not add missing radio hardware, frequencies, or network features. The carrier-published Consumer Code for Wireless Service puts the distinction plainly: “Unlocking a device will not necessarily make a device interoperable with other networks; a device designed for one network is not made technologically compatible with another network merely by ‘unlocking’ it.” Verizon also notes that eSIM activation after unlocking an unlocked phone can take up to 24 hours; check its BYOD FAQs for the applicable activation details.

Check network support and the services you rely on

Even when a checker accepts a phone, confirm that it supports the destination network’s relevant frequencies and technologies, and the services you need. Pay particular attention to voice service and VoLTE, as well as data and any carrier-specific features that matter to you. T-Mobile’s BYOD guidance calls out frequency and VoLTE considerations; a device that works for some uses may still have reduced coverage, speed, or feature support.

Think about where and how you use the phone: coverage at home, work, and regular travel locations can matter more than a general compatibility label. Compare the carrier’s coverage information for those places, and treat the checker’s result as an eligibility signal rather than a guarantee of performance. If you depend on a specific feature, ask the carrier whether it works on that exact model variant.

Confirm SIM type and activation steps

Check whether the phone and destination carrier support the activation method you intend to use: a physical SIM or eSIM. Then follow the carrier’s instructions for that device and line. Do not assume that eSIM support on the phone guarantees immediate activation; timing and requirements can differ by carrier and device.

Before starting, confirm how the carrier handles number transfer and what information it needs from your current account. Keep the old service active until the new line is working and, if you are transferring your number, the transfer has completed. Cancelling too early can disrupt service or complicate the move.

Back up your data and compare the plan separately

Back up the phone before changing service or moving a number. AT&T’s BYOD guidance includes backing up data as part of switching preparation. Follow the backup method appropriate to your phone, and make sure you can access important account credentials before beginning activation.

Use this checklist before buying or switching

  1. Get the exact phone model, regional variant, and IMEI from the seller or current owner.
  2. Run the IMEI through the destination carrier’s BYOD checker and note whether it reports full or partial compatibility.
  3. Confirm the phone’s unlock status with its current carrier. If it is locked, verify eligibility and the expected unlock timing before setting a switch date.
  4. Check supported network frequencies and technologies, voice, data, VoLTE, and any carrier features you need.
  5. Review coverage where you use the phone and confirm the intended physical SIM or eSIM activation process.
  6. Back up your data, follow the new carrier’s activation and number-transfer instructions, and keep the old service until the new line is working.
  7. Review plan terms separately from device compatibility.
