Before buying a VR headset, confirm it works with the games and hardware you already plan to use, can be adjusted to fit you, and fits your available space and budget. A headset’s resolution or comfort claims alone cannot answer those questions. Use the checklist below to compare the complete setup, not just the headset.
1. Start with the games and platform
Make a short list of the games you want to play, then verify each game’s supported headset and platform. Do this before comparing display specifications: a headset that cannot run your intended games is the wrong choice regardless of its technical features.
PlayStation VR2 illustrates why platform compatibility needs careful checking. For console play, Sony requires a PS5; PS VR2 is not compatible with PS4 and does not play original PS VR titles. For PC play, it uses a separate PC adapter and SteamVR games. Sony documents differences between the PC and PS5 experiences on its PS VR2 PC compatibility page and PC adapter support page.
PC compatibility does not mean every PS5 feature carries over. On PC, PS VR2 does not provide HDR output, headset eye tracking, headset feedback, Sense controller adaptive triggers, or the full Sense controller haptics available on PS5; basic controller vibration remains. Treat this as a feature difference, not as a claim that PC play is incompatible.

2. Check fit, adjustments, and glasses clearance
Fit is personal, so treat product specifications and manufacturer comfort guidance as starting points rather than guarantees of comfort over a long session. Check whether the headset lets you adjust the headband, the distance of the display from your face (sometimes called the scope), and the lens position or spacing. These controls can help you position the image and distribute the headset more comfortably.
Sony says PS VR2 has an adjustable headband, scope, and lens spacing, and is designed to accommodate glasses. It also cautions that very wide or unusually shaped frames may not fit. If you wear glasses, check clearance with your own frames rather than assuming all glasses will fit. Where possible, try the headset and review the retailer’s return policy before purchase. 3. Compare specifications in context
Specifications help you compare products, but they do not establish whether a headset will suit your face, preferred games, or setup. Compare equivalent measures across the particular headsets you are considering, and check which features work on your intended platform.

When comparing headsets, look at resolution per eye, refresh rate, lens adjustment, tracking, connection method, and supported games together. A higher or lower figure by itself is not a complete measure of image quality or comfort.
4. Verify the hardware and connections you need
For PS VR2 on PS5
Console play requires a PS5. Confirm you own one, or include the console in your setup budget; PS4 is not a substitute for PS VR2 console compatibility.

For PS VR2 on PC
Sony lists the following minimum PC requirements for PS VR2 PC use on its current compatibility page. Requirements can change, so check that page and the adapter details against your exact PC configuration before buying.

DisplayPort over USB Type-C is not compatible with the PS VR2 PC adapter. These are minimum requirements, not a guarantee of ideal performance. Check the PC adapter’s connection requirements before purchase, especially if your graphics card or laptop has limited ports.

Other headsets can require a different arrangement. For example, Valve’s Valve Index kit page describes a PC-based setup with base stations and compatible system components. Check the exact kit contents and requirements for the product you intend to buy rather than assuming every PC headset connects or tracks in the same way.

5. Measure your play space
Use the guidance for the specific headset and game, and clear enough space to move your arms without hitting furniture or other obstacles. For PS VR2, Sony recommends at least 1 m × 1 m of clear space for seated or standing play, with room to move your arms freely, and 2 m × 2 m for roomscale play. These are Sony’s PS VR2 recommendations, not universal space requirements for every VR headset.

Budget for the equipment and software required for your intended setup, not just the headset’s listed price. Start with the platform you do not already own, then add required accessories and the games you plan to play.

- Headset and required platform: Include a compatible console or gaming PC if you do not already have one.
- Required connection hardware: Add any adapter or other required equipment for your chosen platform. PS VR2 PC use requires the PC adapter.
- Games: Include the titles you expect to buy, and confirm they are available for the headset and platform.
- Accessories you actually need: Consider charging equipment, audio, prescription lenses, replacement parts, or comfort accessories only if they address your setup or needs.
Sony lists the PS VR2 headset, Sense controllers, USB cable, stereo headphones, three pairs of earpieces, and printed materials in the box. It describes the PC adapter and controller charging station as separate products. Check the current package contents and retailer listings in your country: prices, stock, and availability vary, and no single current local total is established here.
7. Use the same checklist for every headset
Once you have a shortlist, compare each option against the same practical questions. This keeps a strong specification from distracting you from a platform mismatch or an unexpected equipment cost.
