Before buying a VR game, check the exact game edition against your headset and platform, confirm whether another version or upgrade is actually included, and make sure its play style fits your clear floor space. A “VR” label by itself does not guarantee compatibility.
Use this quick rule: identify your headset, the device or PC it will run on, and the specific store edition you intend to buy. Then verify the listing and setup requirements before checkout.
1. Match the game listing to your exact headset and platform
VR games are tied to particular platforms and editions. A PlayStation, Steam PC, or standalone headset version may be a different product, even when the title is the same. Check the listing for the precise headset and platform you plan to use; do not infer support from a game’s name, trailer, or the general “VR” label.

For PlayStation, Sony says PS VR2 works with PS5, not PS4, and PS VR games are not compatible with PS VR2 (nor PS VR2 games with PS VR). PlayStation advises: “Always check the compatibility of a game when purchasing on PlayStation Store.” Use the PS VR2 compatibility support page and the individual game’s current Store listing.

Check that the store region and edition shown are the ones for your account and intended platform. Availability and offers can vary, so the listing you can actually purchase is the relevant one.
2. Check cross-buy and upgrades separately
Owning one version does not automatically mean you own another. A PS4 PS VR release, PS5 PS VR2 edition, PC version, standalone Quest build, and Steam release may each have separate listings and entitlements.

For PlayStation, the official FAQ says: “Some games may be available for cross buy or upgrades on a title-by-title basis.” It also says: “The offering and any associated costs are based on the developer’s preference.” Check the specific title’s listing and upgrade terms to confirm whether the other version is included, requires a separate purchase, or has a fee. 3. Match the play style to your usable space
Look for whether the game supports sitting, standing, or roomscale play, then compare that requirement with the clear area where you can move safely. Usable space means more than the room’s overall dimensions: account for furniture, walls, pets, and the room needed to swing controllers without hitting anything.

Sony’s current PS VR2 play-area guidance describes the PS5 setup measurements. Meta’s Boundary documentation gives its roomscale recommendation. These figures apply to their stated contexts; always check the individual game’s supported play style and the setup guidance for your headset.

Using a headset with a PC can change both the library and the hardware you need. Sony says PS VR2 on PS5 plays PS VR2 games, while PS VR2 on PC is used for VR games available on Steam. Sony also notes that some features and boundary behavior differ between PC and PS5. Review its PS VR2 on PC versus PS5 comparison before choosing which version to buy.

The PlayStation VR2 app on Steam lists a PS VR2 headset and Sense controllers, a PC adapter, and a DisplayPort 1.4 cable among its requirements. Bluetooth hardware is required conditionally, depending on setup. Check the live Steam requirements and Sony’s setup instructions for your specific PC before purchase; the PS5 edition is not a substitute for a Steam listing.
If you are considering wireless PC streaming instead, distinguish the streaming software’s requirements from the game’s own requirements. For example, Valve’s Steam Link requirements for Meta, HTC, and PICO headsets specify Windows 10 or newer, a supported GPU, and 5 GHz/Wi-Fi 5 minimum for Steam Link. Those are Steam Link requirements, not universal requirements for VR games or all PC headsets.

5. Use this checklist at checkout
- Headset and platform: Does the exact listing support your headset on the device you will use—console, PC, or standalone?
- Edition: Is this the intended native, standalone, or PC-streamed version, and does the listing match your account’s region?
- Cross-buy or upgrade: Does the listing explicitly say another version is included? If not, check the title’s terms and any stated upgrade fee.
- Play style: Does the game support sitting, standing, or roomscale in the way you intend to play?
- Clear space: Can you meet the relevant headset guidance and move controllers safely without obstructions?
- PC setup: Have you confirmed the required app, headset, controllers, adapter, cable, PC capability, and—if streaming—network conditions?
- Current listing: Recheck the store page for the exact edition before paying; compatibility and offer details are title-specific.
