Before paying, verify the exact release, match every claimed component to that edition’s official contents, inspect the item’s condition and evidence of authenticity, and understand the marketplace’s current buyer-protection and return terms. “Complete” and “sealed” are seller claims—not proof—and there is no universal fair price for collector’s editions.
Identify the exact edition and release
Start by pinning down what the listing is actually offering. Record the game title, platform, edition name, region, language, and any packaging revision or release variant visible in the photos. Similar names can refer to different bundles, and region or revision differences can affect which components belong together.
Publishers use collector’s editions for physical releases bundled with themed collectibles such as figurines, artbooks, SteelBooks, and soundtracks. A Deluxe or Ultimate edition may instead emphasize digital content; it should not be treated as the same physical bundle. Match every component to the official contents
Find release-specific information from the publisher or another trustworthy reference, then make a checklist. Ask the seller to confirm each item rather than relying on a broad “complete” label.

- The game and its format, such as disc or cartridge
- Each advertised collectible, including figures, books, cards, or other extras
- SteelBook, outer box, trays, inserts, manuals, and other packaging components
- Any code or digital entitlement, and whether it has been redeemed or can still be used
CGC’s video-game completeness guide documents how boxes, manuals, inserts, regions, and revisions can vary. Use the exact release as the standard—not what another edition of the same game included. If the seller cannot show or account for a component, treat completeness as unverified and decide whether that uncertainty is acceptable.
Assess whether “sealed” is credible
Shrink wrap alone does not establish that a game is factory sealed. CGC notes that second-hand stores may reseal used games and that packaging can show signs of resealing or counterfeiting. Compare the wrap and seal, package details, identifiers, and visible contents with references for the specific release. CGC’s counterfeit-identification guidance explains signs to examine.

Ask for clear, current photos if the listing does not show the relevant details. If you still cannot verify the seal or authenticity, value the item as uncertain or pass on it rather than paying a sealed-item premium.

Inspect the condition of each part
Request well-lit photos of the front, back, sides, corners, seals, inner packaging, game media, and every collectible. Ask specifically about dents, tears, fading, scratches, missing inserts, replaced parts, odor, and damage from storage. If the game is meant to be playable, ask whether the seller has tested it and what the test established.

Compare the answers and photos with the written condition description and return terms. eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee guidance describes condition and accessory checks for items to which its service applies; the reviewed guidance does not establish that video game collector’s editions qualify. Do not interpret the program as authentication or inspection for a game listing unless the listing and current policy explicitly confirm coverage.
Check seller, return, and payment protections
Review the seller’s history and available documentation, then read the buyer-protection policy for the exact marketplace site and checkout country before paying. Policies can have conditions and requirements. eBay’s Money Back Guarantee policy, for example, describes protections for non-delivery and items that do not match their descriptions. Protection is not the same as expert authentication and may not address every dispute.

eBay states, “Counterfeit or fake items aren’t allowed on eBay” in its Counterfeit Item policy. That is a platform rule, not proof that a particular listing is genuine. Keep a copy of the listing, seller messages, payment record, and delivery details in case you need to raise a claim.

Compare prices only with genuinely similar sales
Use completed sales where available, matching the exact edition, platform, region, completeness, and condition. An incomplete copy, a different regional release, or a sealed version is not a like-for-like comparison. Bandai Namco notes that resale value depends on the title and demand and characterizes investing in collector’s editions as a gamble; no reliable universal fair-price figure applies to an unspecified game and configuration. Avoid treating a listing’s asking price as evidence of market value.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Identify it: Write down the exact title, platform, edition, region, language, and release or packaging variant.
- Verify contents: Compare each included item and packaging component against release-specific information; ask about codes and missing or replaced parts.
- Evaluate authenticity: Request close, well-lit photos of seals, identifiers, and components. Do not equate shrink wrap with a verified factory seal.
- Document condition: Check photos and seller answers against the listing description, including the state and test status of the game itself.
- Understand recourse: Read the current marketplace policy and return terms for your checkout country, and save the listing and transaction records.
- Compare like with like: Check completed sales for the same edition and configuration, not merely the same game title.
If a seller will not answer specific questions or provide reasonable photos, the missing evidence is itself relevant to the decision. Ask for it, accept the uncertainty in your offer, or walk away.
