Before buying, identify the phone’s exact model and regional variant, confirm it is unlocked, and check its IMEI with the US carrier you plan to use. Then compare the variant’s supported network features and inspect the individual phone. “Unlocked” does not mean that every carrier feature will work.
Start with the exact model and regional variant
Ask the seller for the model number, regional variant, storage configuration, and carrier history. A family name alone is not precise enough: ZTE’s support catalog lists distinct models such as the Axon 30, Axon 40 Pro, Axon 30 Ultra 5G, and Axon 40 Ultra, and notes that availability varies by region. Check the ZTE support catalog for the exact model rather than assuming a similarly named phone has the same specifications. The catalog does not establish that a listed phone is currently sold new in the US.
Match the seller’s model details to the device itself. Check Settings > About phone and compare the displayed model with the listing and any box or purchase documentation. If details do not match, pause before paying.

Get the device’s IMEI from the seller and enter it in the intended carrier’s bring-your-own-device (BYOD) checker before paying. Repeat the check in person if practical. T-Mobile says its checker uses the IMEI to assess compatibility and may identify lock status; AT&T’s BYOD guidance also requests an IMEI or ESN to check a device. Use T-Mobile’s BYOD checker or AT&T’s BYOD guidance, depending on the network you plan to use.

A seller’s claim that a phone “works with all carriers” is not a substitute for checking that exact IMEI. A carrier checker is the most useful step in this process, but no result can be inferred without submitting the particular phone’s IMEI. If you are considering Verizon or an MVNO, use that provider’s own eligibility tool; do not assume an unlocked phone will qualify.
Verify unlock status and network features separately
Confirm the phone is unlocked
Ask the seller to show that the phone is network-unlocked and, where possible, have the original carrier confirm it. If the device is still locked, the original carrier—not the buyer or a seller’s generic promise—should confirm eligibility and complete the unlock. T-Mobile and AT&T both treat unlock status as a separate requirement from compatibility.

Check bands and calling support for the exact variant
Compare the exact variant’s supported frequency bands and VoLTE support with the intended carrier’s current requirements. T-Mobile advises buyers to check its frequencies and VoLTE. It warns that partial compatibility can mean reduced coverage and slower speeds, and does not guarantee third-party-device performance. Review T-Mobile’s compatibility guidance alongside the device specifications.
Do not apply a band list from one ZTE phone to another. ZTE’s connectivity guidance illustrates why frequency support matters, but its example bands are not universal across Axon, Blade, or carrier-branded models. Verify specifications for the exact model and check the carrier’s current requirements. Passing an IMEI check or briefly connecting to a network does not prove full coverage or guarantee future carrier acceptance.

Inspect the individual phone before completing the sale
Check condition and basic functions
- Inspect the screen for cracks, dead pixels, burn-in, touch problems, and lifted edges; check the frame, camera glass, and ports for damage.
- Test charging, buttons, microphones, speakers, cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and biometrics if present.
- Check SIM-tray condition and, if practical, insert a SIM, place a call, send a text, and test mobile data. Treat a brief successful test as a spot check, not proof of full coverage.
- Observe battery behavior during use. Do not rely on a precise remaining-health figure unless the device provides a trustworthy measurement.
Clarify history, ownership, and sale terms
Ask about repairs, water exposure, included charger and accessories, and the return window. Request proof of purchase or other reasonable evidence of ownership, and agree what happens if the IMEI is blocked or the phone is not as described. Before handing over payment, have the seller remove their accounts and screen lock and complete the reset so that factory-reset protection does not prevent you from setting up the phone.
Use extra checks for a remote purchase
- Request current photos or video of the specific device, not stock images.
- Get the model number and IMEI so you can check the intended carrier before ordering.
- Get the return period and conditions in writing, and use a payment method with buyer protection.
- Do not treat listing text such as “unlocked” as proof of carrier eligibility or the phone’s condition.
Compare listings on the details that affect your decision
When choosing between two used or unlocked ZTE phones, compare their exact model and regional variant, carrier eligibility and supported network features, unlock status, physical condition, battery behavior, repair history, model-specific support information, price, return policy, seller reputation, and included accessories. ZTE’s support catalog can help locate model-specific information, but the available sources do not establish a support end date or update commitment for a particular phone. Verify current details for the exact model rather than assuming its age or family name guarantees future updates.
