Before buying a stock listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), check what the company does, what its reports say, how its price and financial measures compare with its prospects, whether the risk and liquidity fit your needs, and whether your broker and account arrangements are sound. No single ratio or past price move can establish that a share is a good purchase. This is general investor education, not a recommendation to buy a particular security.
1. Understand the company before judging its share price
Start with the issuer, not a tip or a familiar name. Be able to explain in plain language what the company sells or does, how it earns revenue, and which factors could materially affect its business. Consider sector conditions and the company’s stated plans and strategy.
Read the latest annual report and accounts, other public statements, and relevant issuer announcements. The National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL) investor guide advises investors to read annual reports to understand a company’s business plans and strategy. PSX likewise tells investors to do their homework rather than rely on hearsay.
When comparing companies, look at their businesses, sectors, key risks, reported financial performance, and balance sheets. Two companies in the same broad sector may still have different exposures and prospects, so a comparison should explain differences rather than treat one company’s figures as a standard for all.

2. Read financial and valuation measures in context
PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide defines several commonly used measures. Use them as prompts for further investigation, not as automatic buy or sell signals.
| Measure | What it indicates | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Earnings per share (EPS) | Net profit after tax divided by shares outstanding; a per-share view of earnings. | Examine the company’s earnings record and the factors that may affect future results. |
| Price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) | Share price divided by EPS; a way to relate price to earnings. | Compare with the company’s own history and relevant businesses, while considering their different prospects and risks. |
| Book value per share | Company equity divided by shares outstanding; an indication of the asset coverage represented by each share. | Read it alongside the company’s financial statements and business model; it does not by itself establish that a share is cheap or safe. |
| Dividend yield | Cash dividend relative to share price, expressed as a percentage. | Consider dividend history and whether income is part of your objective; a yield alone does not establish that a dividend will continue. |
There is no universal acceptable P/E, dividend yield, or book-value relationship established by these definitions. Accounting quality, business prospects, sector exposure, and the price you pay all matter. A low ratio is not proof of value, and a high one is not proof that a share is unsuitable.

3. Decide whether the risk, liquidity, and timing fit you
Share prices can fall, and returns are unpredictable. Before buying, consider whether you could tolerate a decline, whether you may need the money soon, and whether the purchase would concentrate too much of your investments in one company or sector. PSX’s investor guidance discusses risk and return, liquidity, safety, and diversification, and cautions against investing money you need immediately.
- Risk tolerance: Consider the loss you could withstand without jeopardizing essential expenses or financial plans.
- Time horizon: Decide whether you can leave the investment in place through price fluctuations rather than relying on a short-term rise.
- Liquidity: Check how actively the share trades and whether you could buy or sell at a reasonable price when needed. A quoted price does not guarantee a transaction at that price.
- Diversification: Consider the effect of the position on your exposure to a single company or sector.
Do not treat past performance as a promise of future returns. Guaranteed-return claims, unrealistic profit promises, and rumor-based tips are warning signs, not a substitute for evaluating the company and the risk.
4. Verify the broker, charges, and account terms
Before opening or using an account, check that the broker is licensed by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and that the relevant office or branch is registered. PSX describes these checks as prudent and warns that using an unregistered party can leave an investor without ordinary complaint or recovery routes.
Read the account-opening documents and the Risk Disclosure Document before commencing business. PSX’s Investor Awareness Guide tells customers to read and understand that document in their own interests. Ask for the broker’s current tariff and account terms, and identify all costs that may apply:

- Broker commission.
- Applicable PSX, CDC, NCCPL, and SECP charges.
- Applicable taxes or duties.
Rates and charges can change, and no current rate is established here. Confirm the broker’s latest tariff and applicable official notices before placing an order. If comparing brokers or account arrangements, compare registration, total disclosed costs, custody and reporting arrangements, alerts, and service terms rather than relying on a provider’s claims.

Save your order instructions and trade confirmations. PSX says a confirmation should show trade details and charges; its guide also describes NCCPL trade alerts and CDC alerts for securities movements. Compare the cash and securities positions in account statements with the trades you actually instructed, and report discrepancies promptly through the appropriate broker and complaint channels.
Best Value
Account arrangements differ. PSX’s guide describes direct CDC investor accounts and NCCPL/CDC settlement or custodial services; compare current terms and fees rather than assuming one route is best for every investor.
PSX describes the Centralized Customers Protection Compensation Fund (CCPF) as providing a maximum of PKR 1,000,000 per claimant for a claim admitted by PSX against a defaulter broker. This is conditional on PSX admitting the claim under the fund’s rules; it is not protection against losses caused by a falling share price. Check the current fund rules and eligibility before relying on it.
