Before buying a Samsung phone through a carrier promotion, verify the exact offer for your model and account, then compare the phone payments and credits with the service-plan cost over the time you expect to stay. A “free phone” headline does not tell you whether you qualify, when credits arrive, what happens if you leave, or when the device can be unlocked.
Confirm the offer applies to you and your exact phone
Start with the terms attached to the specific Galaxy model and storage configuration—not an ad headline or a verbal summary. Verizon notes that requirements differ by promotion and that credits may end if you no longer meet them (Verizon’s mobile device deals FAQ).
- Is the offer for new customers, existing customers, or both?
- Does it require a new line, a port-in, or a specific account status?
- Which plan qualifies, and must you finance the phone?
- Is a particular trade-in required? Which models and conditions qualify?
- What are the offer’s start and end dates, and are there credit or account conditions?
Ask for the full terms in writing and confirm they match your account before placing the order. Eligibility can hinge on a detail such as the plan, line, trade-in model, or financing method.

Compare the phone and service costs over the same period
Work out what you would pay for both the phone and service during the time you expect to keep the carrier. Compare that total with the plan you would choose without the promotion; a discount on the handset can be offset by a more expensive required plan.

- Phone’s full retail price and any down payment
- Installment amount and duration
- Monthly promotional credit and how long it is scheduled to apply
- Price of the qualifying plan compared with your preferred plan
- Taxes, fees, and any disclosed one-time charges
- Cost of staying until credits finish, plus any remaining phone balance if you leave earlier
Use the same storage configuration and expected holding period for every offer you compare. Don’t count credits you might forfeit as guaranteed savings.
A dated example shows why the details matter: Boost Mobile’s Infinite Access for Galaxy terms dated August 21, 2025 described a $65 monthly fee that included a Galaxy S- or Z-series phone, subject to model and promotion limits. The terms specified a 36-month finance agreement, taxes on the full pre-credit list price due at sale, and credits spread over 36 months while the customer remained active and in good standing. They also said credits would be forfeited if the plan was canceled, terminated, or suspended, and that early payment forfeited remaining credits (Boost Mobile’s terms). This is an illustration of one dated offer, not current or universal carrier pricing.

Find out how bill credits and early exits work
A monthly bill credit is different from an instant discount: you may pay installments while credits are applied over time. Samsung says carrier credits generally begin within one to three billing periods after the carrier accepts the trade-in. Samsung also says its instant trade-in discount cannot be combined with carrier bill credits (Samsung’s trade-in FAQ and terms).

Check the trade-in rules before handing over your old phone
Confirm the exact qualifying make and model, condition requirements, submission deadline, return method, required documentation, and how the carrier confirms acceptance. Do not assume that a carrier uses Samsung’s direct trade-in criteria.
For its own direct program, Samsung says the trade-in device must power on and hold a charge, have a functioning display, be owned by the customer, not be banned, and have anti-theft locks disabled. Samsung may value a nonconforming device at zero and charge back its instant discount. Any remaining financing payments on a traded-in device remain the customer’s responsibility, so check with the carrier or lender before surrendering a financed phone (Samsung’s direct trade-in eligibility terms).

Samsung’s current direct-program FAQ gives buyers 15 days after receiving the new device to ship the old one and describes possible charges if it is not sent or fails inspection. If the carrier is handling the trade-in, follow its own instructions and deadlines instead.
- Back up the old phone and transfer the data you need.
- Remove the SIM and memory card, sign out of relevant accounts, and disable anti-theft locks.
- Factory-reset the device before handing it over or shipping it.
- Photograph its condition and keep the shipping receipt or store receipt.
Check when you can unlock the phone
If you may switch carriers, use a local SIM while traveling, or resell the device, check the seller’s current unlocking policy for the specific phone. Unlocking does not guarantee full compatibility with every other network. Also ask whether paying off the balance changes promotional credits.

These are carrier-specific published rules, not a universal 60-day federal requirement. The FCC document identified on unlocking is a 2024 proposed rule, not proof that the proposal became a generally applicable federal rule (FCC’s proposed 60-day unlocking rule).
Keep records and check the first bills
Save the exact offer and its date, order confirmation, qualifying plan name, installment schedule, trade-in model and condition, and proof of shipment or store return. Keep any carrier notice confirming trade-in acceptance or credit eligibility. Once the stated processing interval has passed, compare the first few bills with the promised device payment and credit; report discrepancies promptly through the carrier’s documented support channel.
Compare offers using the same assumptions
If you have more than one real offer, compare them side by side using the same phone storage, service period, and assumptions. Include:

- Unlock timing, network compatibility, coverage, taxes, fees, and other disclosed charges
There is no universal best promotion: the value depends on the exact phone, your account and plan needs, eligible trade-in, location and coverage, and how long you expect to remain with the carrier.
